Hi Inspire,

Your question is certainly a good one and very recently (couple years)
I asked my self the very same question. But there's a few question
I needed to answer first. ie: what kind of boat do you want to build?,
where do I plan on using it? and what is your budget? what's is your
inspiration? From here you can start to decide on your materials.
Personally I found the planning as much fun as the actual building.
It,s a pretty big task in itself. when all was said and done I built a boat
that is very much custom to my answers to the above questions.

Material wise (for me) it was: Marine plywood, epoxy and fiber. Of course
everybody's boat is going to be different. I have finished my boat to the rowing stage and there is still work to be done regarding the sailing aspect and some other odds and ends I have yet to finish.

It is a wonderful experience and I wish you every success.
I hope this helps to clarify some of your question. We need a little
more detail of what you would like to build before one can answer your
question regarding materials. I am indeed a junior member/builder (I'm 50+ though *L*) There are members in this forum that are very helpful with much more experience than I will every have. so... as your questions become more detailed, the members will be able to offer more advise. ( I did find myself "hitting the books" a lot).

regards
DE
