Valid points, PAR, as usual. Most of the stories we hear about sailors getting into nasty conditions seem to involve a rush to meet a particular schedule, get to some specific port by a given date, etc.

Since we're talking here about smaller yachts, storm tactics and seamanship are probably going to differ somewhat from what might be expected in a larger boat. Being smaller, lighter and slower on average means that you're probably already having a rough time in conditions where the bigger boats are still enjoying themselves. And it also means that your passages will take longer, exposing you to more weather and longer-range (thus less reliable) forecasts.

I've been at least a week away from a port several times. There is no way around or away from the weather. Also, meeting some kind of deadline is not always unreasonable. The ones that stay drinking margaritas are often the owners of floating reefs. They do one passage in their life and spend the rest talking about it.

It might be helpful if the media did not press the public into doing foolish things. The Guiness Book of World Records should be renamed A
FOOL AND
COMMON SENSE.
Yesterday I read about a man who crossed the Atlantic is a six foot boat. THe second question should be:
Does his mother know he did this?
