| custom wheel Make, out of wood, the outer rim and the hub as a form to later take to your local foundry where they can use it to make a mold and in turn pour a bronze or aluma-bronze (mix of aluminum and bronze, a bit harder to work but won't tarnish after time). Then all you need are the spokes and handles... and to do some drilling and tapping too. The kewl thing is, if you make the rim deep and wide enough you can get those little plastic letters they sell for signs at stationary stores (you know, the letters can be moved around) and stick them to the rim before it gets to the foundry so everyone else knows who dun it...... put your name, the boat's name, the year of completion. You decide. John |

| I've just built a 95cm diameter ships wheel. Rim was laminated from 1mm oak veneer in 2m long strips, 2 inches wide to a thickness of approx 38mm - 1 1/2 inches. 2 inch height then planed down to match laminated thickness. Outer corners were rounded off using a 19mm radius router cutter. Hub turned from a piece of elm, 8 sockets bored for spoke inboard ends and brass bush sits in centre to take shaft to steering pump. 8 13 inch spokes turned from fench oak on a drill powered lathe. Difference in the 4 diameters of the spokes is less than 0.25mm - so it is very nearly a circle. Took around 80 hours to build. |
