Passage makers

Hi there,

Just signed up here and was wanting to know if anyone might impart some knowledge on the subject of building long-distance boats. I want to stick with power. Something comfortable. Between 55'-70'. In the price range of 500k to 1 million (preferably the lower end). What would be a good hull design to go with? I've been traveling the world for 3 years now and I'm ready to do it on the water so any thoughts are appreciated. Ive looked at quite a few of the popular manufacturers and they seem to have wasted too much finances on bells and whistles.

For some serious passagemakers in steel or aluminum look for designers John Simpson, Patrick Bray or Michael Kasten. All have excellent offshore trawler style passagemakers in their catalogues that will fit your basic requirements. Avoid all the yachty "bling bling" and you might be able to make your budget. There's a few Diesel Ducks out there for sale, Idlewild comes to mind. It was for sale but I've lost the link for around $500K.

Im going to Germany in about 2 months, from Queensland Australia. Soon as I get settled in there I will move on this. I will have access to a sizeable shed there so i wouldnt mind doing a goodly portion of the work myself. Any other relevant info is much appreciated. Tucksail, Ive got alot of questions so if you are still gainfully employed at S&S when I get to Cologne I will call you for sure.
