There is no perfect tool for sanding, only a variety of sanders, and they all have their relative merits, sort of like a set of golf clubs, every one does a different job, so start off with a random orbital if you only are buying one at a time, the 1/4 sheet and 1/2 sheet sanders still have their uses, as does a delta sander with extensions, it is horses for courses, but a finishing random orbital would be the most used of my sanders.
