new guy needs help

I am making a front casting deck for my gheenoe and have a little fiberglass knoledge... I am laminating 1/8th door skin for the deck which is workin well. My problem is when trying to wrap cloth around a 1x2 I cannot for the life of me get it to lay flat all the way around without air bubbles could it be that the the cloth I am using is too thick? I also need to glass in a bulkhead and some wood for a ledger for this deck to rest on how many layers would I need to accoumplish this and would my widest piece go on first and work smaller or the other way around... I have so many questions I cannot think of them all, so if you havew any tips for a newbie lets hear them. ( I found out wax paper is really useful!!!) Thanks for your help

Please don't take this wrong but I have a question...why don't you "just" use 3/4 inch plywood and go at that? The weight isn't bad in the size you are wanting and it will be more than strong enough. Most Home Depots carry marine plywood in 1/2 inch - 3/4 inch sizes, 1/2 sheets even.
