Need some HELP!

Hi all
I am just a recreational boat user who likes to sometimes build things. But my problem today lies with what me and my partner built. He has a bi hull jetski type boat with an 25hp outboard motor. Now we only usually do minor repairs to our family boats so building a whole boat from scratch was new to us. Here is where the problem lies. We have all the constuction done but we have been stunted at providing the steering and gearing. The outboard has a throttle stick(forgive me for not knowing the terms) now shold we get someone professional to help us so we can do the gears and throttle from our our motorbike steering or is there a way we can do it? Also should we use hydraulic steering or do you think a pulley system would work? Keep in mind the engine bay is compact.

Any ideas from anyone would be great! Thanks

Lozza

You didn't say, but I suspect the boat is 20' or under.

Lotsa options for steering depending on how you want to configure the cockpit...none of them will require hydraulics witha 25hp motor....simple pulleys and light SS cable running beneath the gunwales will do nicely...controlled by either a wheel (requires a console) or a vertical tiller (can be fitted aside a gunwale, leaving the cockpit open).

All my wood boatbuilding books by John Gardner and others have diagrams....will look for one of the web for you.

That would great. Yeah I think pulleys are the definate go. Do you know if it easy to convert the motor to remote steering? Is there a kit we can buy?

Thanks for your help.

Many tiller outboards have a bar with a hole in the front . That is where you hook up the steering cable to.

The steering linkage will be easy and can be done with things from the hardware store. My thinking is that a flex-cable steering linkage would be much easier and not much more expensive. The linkage for the throttle and the transmission is a little more complicated. I would suggest you visit a dealer for your motor and they will be able to supply a throttle linkage designed for your model.

Here you go...they have downloadable product info on mechanical steering systems.

But for the money, I'd still buy Gardeners' Building Classic Small Craft Vol I....lotsa solutions even for non-wooden boats.

And browze the Glen-L site...a "search" for cable steering will get many diagrams.

If you are talking
about a "tiller" handle/stick, the fuel. shift and direction are all in 1 unit. The direction thing is fairley easy. The fuel and gear shifting will require some bracket design. It may not even be possible to build anything that delivers reliability or safety.. Checking with the manufacturer for a conversion kit , is a place tomstart. As for steering, I'd go with push/pull cables.
