AndySGray back at #350 mentioned the SVSeeker site wherein Doug Jackson was shown repairing a CPP. I searched this forum for further references to this man without success & frankly, I was surprised no one else in the forum apparently seems to be aware of what he's doing. If I'm not right, then apologies.

I think I've now watched all his videos detailing the building of a steel Origami twin keel, junk design drawn up by Jack Carson; the latest video being posted on 24th December. Read how he & Kay started:

    Spring 2006

Once we decided to build our own boat we set out to find a building site. Where we could live on site, be close to work, have plenty of room, and where no one would care about the noise or scenery.

What we found was a 100 x 200 ft lot with an abandoned house beside the rail road, highway, tree service yard, steel yard, and scrap yard. In the heart of Meth Lab central. We doubled the sellers best offer and paid $1,500. No, that's right. 1,500USD.

The really surprising thing? We love the neighbourhood. Seriously! If we were not building a boat, we'd stay right here......................

Find the boat in their front yard in satellite view.

Here is the link to their build Log, which includes many videos.

    All the best.

Thanks Pericles, I've scanned thru the info and haven't yet got into the CPP system other than picking it up in Vancouver but am anxious to find if along with his other many talents and projects he might have all or part of a smaller CPP system suitable for the 30hp. range. The unit he picked up in Vancouver is far too large for the lower HP. motors. Very busy man indeed ---

    VN,

There may be another solution for your needs. Bruntons Propellers in the UK supply their Autoprop. It has a unique ability to change pitch automatically to suit prevailing wind and sea conditions when motoring or motor sailing. Here's their site.

There are no distributors in Canada & one in the US, luckily not too far from you.

No, I check out their site every so often. I think they're nuts but that's basically a requirement for tackling a project of that size & complexity.

A lot of his machining and welding makes me cringe (especially the high pressure stuff) but he hasn't killed himself yet and his solution to the CPP problems were great.

Yes Pericles I have the Autoprop as my fall back, however before i put out the kind of money they are asking I would want to do a test run on my boat using their product. If their product is as good as they claim surely they would have a cross section of demonstrators. The problem with no dealership in Canada is there is no cross border (U.S. /Canada)30day government regulated return policy coverage if the product fails to perform as advertised. Would it be Germany there would be a 1 year consumer coverage protection. Putting all that aside it is an interesting sounding concept. Still hopeful I'll dig a CPP unit up in an old boat shed somewhere. A few weeks ago I dug up a new condition Cape North Wind Vane for $600. Just need another posterior horseshoe :D

PD this guy has both smarts and guts and hopefully a lot of old age energy in his future as that is no small piece of equipment to operate and maintain. Got to hand it to him, he's on a mission and going "hell bent for leather" to get there . Speaking of "On a mission" Spent the whole day cleaning up the shop( fire proofing) in prep for welding up the ballast cage tomorrow morning. I took the precaution to run a 100ft. water hose from the house to wet down the floor and as standby fire protection . Don't like welding inside the shop but in this case I have no choice .

    VN,

Ask for a quotation using their form. They request a fair amount of detail.

    http://www.bruntons-propellers.com/Quotation/Autoprop-Quotation.php

Being the company they are, I believe they would be very helpful & who knows, you could be their first dealer in Canada? Check out their newsletters & T&C.

    http://www.bruntons-propellers.com/Downloads/pdfs/Bruntons-terms-and-conditions-of-sale.pdf

BTW, I was looking up details of CCP or VPP in Wikipedia & the last paragraph is about Bruntons Autoprop with a link given in the references. Knowing Wikipedia's propensity to distort the facts about global warming, I don't know whether the Autoprop paragraph is good or bad. ;)

Thanks Perry, Some time ago I checked with them (E mail) and received no response, I think because they do not build the smaller units suitable for 30hp. Meanwhile if you would be so kind to keep an eye out for a unit (three blade preferred) that might pop up in the Mother Country I would really appreciate it and please do drop in on my build thread once and awhile, appreciate all input --Thanks Again ---Geo.

My pleasure VN. I have already been looking. Only ones so far are tiny units from China. :)

Why not post here with the details that are required by Bruntons & I can telephone them for you. As they make Autoprops for small yachts I think they'll have one for a 30 hp diesel & I can get a price..

BTW, have you heard of Grim Vane propellers? I had not. They did not work too well for the QEll in 1987.

Completed the spot welding of the ballast cage today which completes the ballast cage. I then went under the hull and adjusted the nuts on the keel bolts where they exit the floor timbers. The idea being that the nuts should be level with the top of the bolt heads. I then went top side again and using plywood pillars and wedges pulled the keel bolts up tight. Once the keel shell is installed I will wire the keel bolts up to the bottom of the shell allowing me to remove the plywood pillars and wedges. This along with applying thickened resin around the bases of all the keel bolts will hold the bolts up tight and prevent the encapsulating resin part of the ballast install from leaking down between the bolts and their holes in the floor timbers. Once the ballast is installed and set up it will just be a matter of torquing the keel bolt nuts to compensate for shrinkage. My next task will be fitting the fore part of the fin shell to the previously installed forefoot section. As shown in the photo, I have separated the two sections slightly to demonstrate the mating flange that will allow using screws to mechanically fasten the two together making for an easier job fiberglass the joint.

    George,

Scunthorp's Celtic Boar symbol at #306 is fantastic.

You, being Viking North, could just for fun, answer it with Odin' Raven.

Hrafnsmerki was a flag, possibly totemic in nature, flown by various Viking chieftains and other Scandinavian rulers during the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. The flag, as depicted in Norse artwork, was roughly triangular, with a rounded outside edge on which there hung a series of tabs or tassels. It bore a resemblance to ornately carved “weather-vanes” used aboard Viking longships.

Ha Ha, ``Odin Raven``just might be what could be painted on her hull. I was very impressed with the Vinland Flag, never knew it existed and being 10th generation Newfoundlander, why Sir, I just had to adopt it :D (As my Avatar)
Note, added flag to this post about a week later to show what I was takling about as I replaced it in a following post)
