| For those who seek an update, the mast will be stepped on a specially designed girder, supporting around a 6 ton compression load and located some 2.25metres aft of the original position... the old images are all here as 1280 x 960jpegs:- http://boats-n-stuff.com.au/forum/in...opic,29.0.html the build continues here:- http://boats-n-stuff.com.au/forum/in...topic,2.0.html the economics links continue here:- http://boats-n-stuff.com.au/forum/in...pic,3.120.html To see the pdf files and images you must register and log-in - spammers and other naughty people force this measure, sadly...

| Don't fill the keels Gday Mas I was lurking though your new site and saw you wanted to fill your keels. I did some quick calcs. Your keels are 3 metres long. Say Naca 009s. So they are 27cm wide max. Lets average this as 14cm over the length. Area of top about 0.3 metres squared. Depth of the keels (guessing) 0.4m. So total volume (with no taper or trapezoid) is about 0.4 x 0.4 = .160 metres cubed - 160 litres. So if you blow a hole in a keel it would be the same as if you put two guys on one hull. The boat won't notice it. If you try to put something inside the keels you will regret it for ever after if there is a leak. Put one very tough inspection bung into the keels (from the cabin sole) and forget them. If you ever make them leak then cut a biggerhole and then be thankful you did not put expanding foam down there to obscure the fact you had a leak and hinder its fix. I would recommend you stay very far away from filling the voids in your boat with anything but nice dry air. Trust your boatbuilding and keep the boat ready to repair. I have seen very bad things happen with expanding foam. Buyers get worried too - what's he trying to hide? Give me lovely clean glass and dusty voids to resolve concerns about workmanship. |

| When the other place has died, OK... Some readers have been asking after Fanie (on both places) and his builds... Has he gone to sleep or skipped town to go fishing/sailing? I hope to be on the water in 4 weeks ...... Assuming there are no delays of distractions...

| Yeah When it gets in the water then the real work begins, don't unwrap the deck chairs just yet. After all that its amazing how forgetting a bottle opener can ruin the day. Boats are never finished. Mine was launched 8 years ago , seems like yesterday and If I was to be honest I know of a moulding that was never screwed just lodged in place, oh and theres another bit on the edge of the galley floor just under the last bit by the door. |

| Hi Guys, I still have not slapped two pieces of glass together on my boat. The reason is that I do not have the place to do it in, and I cannot do the build in the open. I have at great expense had building plans drawed up and approved as you may not do it yourself any more, only counsil selected people may do it now. I then wanted to apply for a second bond to put the building up. The place we have our bond at says they put the already hight bond interest rate up if we take out a second bond. The added cost and new bond registration doesn't justify it. South Africa is a **** place to live in. Everything is currently set to bleed the guy out there to death and there is no encouraging to develop or put anything new out there. What is worse is that our work resourse is dwindling as more and more people are still leaving here. We are holding up but I am worried. Like someone said recently, he has some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that 2011 is going to be worse than 2010. The good news is 2011 is going to be better than 2012. I have one alternative to investigate still. I'm leaving this afternoon and will know if it is going to work out by Tuesday. Nice to see you're stil around Mas, saw some flooding in your neck of the woods on tv ? Good thing you're building a boat eh ![]() Thanks all for your concern. It seems that in the end Manie had the better idea. Get on the boat and fcuk off. I'm actually looking forward to the end of the world in 2012 Any change will now be an improvement...

| Hi Fanie, good to see you are still alive and with the grit of the 'saffa' spirit still strong... Any change, on the Global Economic Crisis front will NOT BE GOOD... Algeria and Egypt are examples... When the sleeping sheeple in USA wake up, I only hope that they direct their anger at the guilty... (banksters, bureaucrats, politicians and 'mainstream'-mass-media)... With USA having the worlds most heavily armed civilian force, ??? I guess they are all noise and no action ? - or - still asleep in their coma-of-denial... I hope to be launched in about 4 weeks, barring any further delays/hold-up reasons... The dream team leader is probably asleep, or drunk, or more interested in watching cricket, or something... Let him find another career... A boat builder he ain't, as he has NO HEART for the task, and appears to have no eye for what is "fair" and true... His work ethic is now showing a definite lack of interest... I will find others to finish the work, as lack of reliability/interest is not conducive to completing a seaworthy boat in a timely fashion... Hope you secure your escape soon... (Crew for Manie?)

| I have not been caught doing that yet, but many who come to inspect tease me with associated "lip sounds", and a quizzical look that says, ... "WTF have you been doing? get sailing.........."
