Method for mounting spreaders

I have a 9 meter mast to build with single in-line spreaders.

The spreaders I will be using are ally foil section, 50mm x 19mm.

I will be fitting them to an ally band to be rivetted to the mast.

My question is; Would 6mm ally plate welded centerline to the foils and then bolted between two plates (also 6mm) welded to the band be sufficient, or should I use thicker plate again?

If anyone has drawings or photos of a better method I'd love to see them.

cheers

Normally not necessary to weld on a doubler to the mast wall . Avoid welding.

The typical spreader is installed on a " Root" ...an alloy bar that passed thru the mast tube. A small backing plate may be used on the mast wall to keep the aft edge of the spreader from compressing the mast tube wall. These plates can be rivetted onto the mast wall

I wish I wasn't. Finally launched Scallywag after two years rebuilding, only to have the port inner sidestay turnbuckle point out that its locknuts weren't. Seeing as how I was on a broad reach in 30 knots the mast didn't stay up for long and I had to get towed back in. Fortunately no-one was hurt, although one of my stanchions got punched through the deck (sigh - I'd just rebuilt that one too)

Seven grand for a replacement mast, or I build one myself for eleven hundred and change. Hence the reason I'm asking about the spreader mounts.

Thanks for the pics Michael, but I'd rather avoid using roots. Double wall thickness from a band should provide sufficient protection from pressure, I was just concerned with whether 6mm plate would be strong enough to use as an external root.

6 mm is fine, though I'd install compression tubes or posts too. Sorry to hear of your "event", though glad you're not shorter by a few inches, after it pounded you on the hat holder. I've broken a number of sticks over the years and very few didn't hurt me in some way. Maybe I just "deserved it" more then you . . .
