Home build? Refurbish? or buy good used turn-key?

I would like to get into a larger boat 40ish feet I can cruise around in with my family/friends for up to a month at a time. I think a trawler would be my best bet for room and ecomony reasons.

Question is, how much does it cost to build my own trawler? I have limited boat building knowledge; (used to build alum fishing boats as welder, upholsterer and general fabricator) enough to put together one of the "kit" boats I see advertised or possibly even from scratch with a decent set of plans.

Right now I just have a 20' cuddy but I want to double it's length
