Have I Siinned?

I have put the first coat of paint primer on my (gulp!) wooden hull. I know it looks like a Navy lifeboat now, but I believe the color paint will spruce it up a bit.
I am going ahead and using the INTERLUX PU paint system. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

Have I sinned?

Perhaps you should have ptactised by painting your ceiling first Flydog....

But fret not. It's always a shock the first time you cover a beautiful piece of timber with 'gunk'. For weeks you'll have had the vision of the golden colours, the pattern of grain, the whole character of wood. Gives a great sense of achievement...Then 'splash' elephant grey...Just 'another' boat....But wait until you apply the white, or blue, even polka-dot yellow. That's when the craft regains its personality.
Trust me Fly. I've been through that journey several times. Hated myself each time...became reconciled only once the paint job was done.
And again, welcome to the legion of the damned.

If I want to keep the looks of a wooden object,---like a boat. I use some stuff called "varnish".

This is totally clear and you can see through it. It bring out all the clolours and oh wow.

Applied in exactly the same way with the same expectations of adhesion and wear.

Oh dear sarcasm again,---but ???????????????

Mother always said "blue and green should not be seen without another color in between"

Sinned?

You guys are great! Keep the comments coming. I'm going to attempt to use a laser level to mark the drawn water line. If anybody has an easier way, I'm listening!

Thanks agian,

flydog

Hey flydog,
If you want to get your timber back, just turn your boat inside out, like you do with a pair of socks, when I turn my socks inside out, I get twice the wear.

The problem with the laser light is you will have to move it to get all the way around the hull and the two levels might be different, you can use 6 foot of clear plastic tuding, fill it full of water leave about a foot either end unfilled. Get a friend or your wife to hold the tude on a spot that you know the water line lies on the hull. When you move the end of your tube the water will move up and down as well as your wifes end but when she says the water in the tube at her end is on the water line mark, the same level will be at your end as well, mark the hull at your end with a pen as your move around your hull. Just remember dont put your end of the tube to low or high or you will spill the water out and you will have to start all over again. When you have enough water level marks, us some masking tap, to mask up your boot top.
And above all remember, not to let the tubing go to waste, get your wife to go round at night and siphon the petrol out of your neighbours cars.

Thats very true Bergalis, but I only let my holes go half way, before I turn my socks over, its all in the timing.

dumpy(builders) level works, stick off ground works!!! you can put your marks so close that fairing it in will be easy
if you buy me a airticket, (bizz class) I can watch and make the coffee and give you a quiet word of encouragement

laser level

I tried the laser level and it seemed to work ok. I placed it on my camera tripod and leveled it on two axis and was able to match up the ends of the waterline with the line of light. Here is a view from the stern:

set the laser a given height above the height of the keel, then use a story stick to read back down to the waterline. You can then work all the way around without resetting the level.

What if the boats not level.

Ah,-- just chuck in in the pond and see for real.

All you need is a little bit of polystyrene and a felt tip pen. Stick the pen into the poly and let it bounce down the loa. You gotta line.

Or you could get a pet Gold fish and put the pen in its -------- Theres many ways of doing this.

The car head lights and a piece of string?????
