Butt Blocks

I'm about to address some loose and leaking butt blocks in my wooden boat and could use some advice. I've been told to just cut out the old blocks fasteners and all and replace with new blocks and fasteners. Or is it better to pull the old fasteners and run new fasteners in there place?? The boat is 54 years old and fastened with hot dipped galvanized screws. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Need more info. Construction type, location of blocks, even wood type may be helpful. Condition of the wood, especially at the joint will also make a difference as to what the best soultion is.

Still out there?

You might want to post this question at the WoodenBoat forum at www.woodenboat.com - there are a lot of experienced wooden boat builders and restorers over there.
