building a Yankee Pine!

hi im building an 8 ft rowing skiff. I discontinued my pdracer project to build this skiff. I used the same side pieces but I cut the original pdracer bottom to form the shape of a skiff. Im really excited to see how this turns out and I will have pics of it when its done...if youve read the american boys handy book(which you probably havent) then you will find it to be very similar to the yankee pine.

Where are you planning on putting it (mast position)?

Steve; your rendering is a good one but I think the boat is going to be ..shall we say....tiddly. At 30 inch beam it is more canoe than dinghy. It looks good that way however. I have no quarrel with the plumb sides. That is a practical solution for simplicity.

On my drawing board there is a similar teeny dink that is contrived to fit into the back of my Honda Element. It has 40 inches of beam and will generate less than 180 foot pounds of RM at 20 degrees. Obviously it can not use much sail. The skinny one you have drawn will be able to handle even less sail. I considered a narrower boat at considerable length but I concluded that my absence of enthusiasm for swimming was reason enough to make it wider.

Considering Sail102's experience level across several areas, I think it's pretty foolish to make a sailing rig for this boat, based on that level of inexperience.

This is the same poster that wanted to put a spinnaker on a 5' catamaran (self designed of course), also a lanteen sail on a 36" mast, etc., etc., etc.

What design is this 8' "Yankee Pine" look-a-like? What you think is similar to a Yankee Pine, may in fact be quite different in several possably key respects.

What I see going on in that photo is a massively over framed 8' boat. It may not even float when you're done. If it does, will it have enough freeboard to tolerate a 3 MPH breeze? How about a person sitting in it? Sweet God, 2x4's in a 8' dinghy and you're going to put a rig on it? Stay within swimming distance of shore buddy.

I think all replies have been right on topic. We are discussing the boat you have started to build and the design processes that went into it aren't we? If you expect us to praise you for a drawing and a picture of few pieces of plywood and some 2x's then you will have to give us some of the reasoning behind some of the more unconventional aspects of your build and the processes by which you came to the decision to use them. We are also interested in the rest of what you had in mind for the boat to make it sail so we can get a better overall idea of what it is you wish to accomplish and how you plan to get there.
