Boat building Hi to All, When is a boat not a ship? When is a ship not a boatbuilder? Im confused. The neares i have come across is Lloyds Register where they have distinction between "Special Service Craft" and " Rules and Regulations for Ships". I was told over the phone that ABS would not class anything below 22 meter. Our local authority our yard was classified as a "ship builder" as we were building over 50 feet (15.24meter). Anything under 50 ft. is classified as boatbuilder. In one of the international magazines i have read, they pertain to boats as "watercrafts". Anything larger is called ships. Thanks

What is a ship? In official terms - in Holland - a ship used to be a square rigger. Anything else is referred to as "boat". Exactly in this context.

My error. I was doing something else and have to close my computer. When is a shipbuilder not a boatbuilder? That is, if your building yachts, no matter how big, are you still a boatbuilder?
