Barrel raft

I want to make a barrel raft meant for covering long distances @ sea. Can you redirect me 2 basics of raftbuilding or special info on this?

I wouldn't go with a barrel raft for the sea. I'd use 2 part foam inside a pontoon (the pontoon needn't be watertight).
