a little crazy but i need help

okay this is going to sound a little crazy to all you boat builders but hey........ me and my friends had a bright idea to build a small raft to float down a small river. i work for a company that sells underground utilities (small and large diameter pipe, sewer pipe, drainage pipe,etc....) we are planning on using 8" 3034 sewer pipe as are frame and connecting the pipe with sewer fittings (90's, wyes, and silicon) is this a good idea? if so are there any ideas of how we should construct this raft. also if anyone needs some good deals on pipe email me at christophereason63@hotmail.com

Sounds like a fun project! Doesn't expect blazing speeds but it could be done.

Hi there, wel this is a great opportunity for your company to promote its products.
I should think they are sponsering you all the way.

I am not familiar with the material 3034 is made of... is this PVC?? then why the silicone??

Anyway, whatever the material you can use the pipe... depending on how much smashing on rocks U intend to do.
Wit 90 deg + 30deg + T and elbows you can come up with a very tidy raft.

Also if pipes of PVC you can bend them by filling with sand and boil in hot water, then bend to your hearts content...done before

Good luck

manual,
the company i work for is just a little mom and pop place. we only have 3 branches. everyone in the company likes me quite a bit,and i always bring up new ideas of what i think could be done different, but i DONT see them supporting this idea in any way.

8" sewer 3034. anyone in the underground buisness its called 8" sdr 3034.
to answer your question, yes, it is a polyvinyl chloride(pvc) gravity sewer pipe. also the sillicon would be used to place around the fittings so that water doesnt get in there at all.

thanks for the post man! hopefully this will work

OK so you have approz 13x4 = 52 ft run @ 8"dia. = 22xr2xh =
7

22 x (4"x4" ) x 624" = 31,378 circa cubic inches of
7
water displaced. All you have to do is calculate how heavy is the water you will be using your raft in..ie fresh water = 1kilo per Ltr
Its fun to work it out

Can you go to 12" diameter pipe? If I understand your description properly, the pipe structure floating at 1/2 depth (you do want to stay a bit above the water surface, I presume) displaces about 525 lbs. The raft will probably weigh around 200 lbs, leaving only 300 lbs for payload (you). Going up to 12" pipe will give a displacement of almost 1200 lbs with an estimated raft weight of 400 lbs, giving you a payload of 800 lbs.

Good luck, Tom Sawyer!
