| Amazed by plans coming to life... I'm in the middle of building my first boat, and I must say that I am really amazed by how it is possible to transform a set of lines (in my case, the Atkin flat-bottom skiff, Cabin Boy), into a real boat. I have come to think of boat plans as DNA... the instructions for building the boat are encoded in the plans, just as the instructions for building a frog or a beautiful woman are encoded in DNA. I don't have enough experience to design boats, but I am amazed by designers and their craft. Back to cutting out my first planks! http://www.unlikelyboatbuilder.com

As soon as I finish building my dingy, I'm going to drive it down to Florida where my wooden Blue Moon yawl is docked, and I'm going to set sail for New York. The Blue Moon has no inboard engine, so I'll be very short on electricity. I plan on using traditional navigation tools (sextant, chip log, lead line, paper charts, etc.) as my primary navigation tools, with hand held GPS as backup. In other words, back in the 19th century. Should be fun! -- John
