If you get a chance look at theSept/Oct 2005 issue of WoodenBoat page 60.In a story about the Arey's Pond Daysailer Tony Dias discusses his solution to keeping the rudder at only 13" in the vertical direction. He used a sort of endplate but definitely not the kind Phil Bolger uses or that Gutelle has illustrated. It is a sort of "(" shape viewed from above(left side forward). The "wings" are highly swept and the thing has a lot of area.
Very interesting and the guy says that the shape helps by not only making such a shallow rudder effective even in the roughest conditions but it provides lift that reduces the tendency of the stern to squat. Check it out...
