Hello people!
I am in a class where we have a project to do. My team has to think of two materials to make the rudder and engine block from and I am asking any of you if you know a lot about both of those. I need advice on what to build my rudder from. I am thinking aluminum rather than any other material. If anybody can help convince me that that is the best choice then that wil be great. Price wise and also i'll need to know how much wear and tear it will get. Also should the engine block also be aluminum rather than stainless steel? I need help! ! ! Thank you.
Dave

What is the size and type of boat? What kind of engine? Rudders are made from all materials, ranging from wood to large steel weldments. Aluminum engines, many with steel or iron wearing parts are popular for outboards and small engines, up to a few hundred horsepower. All iron and steel for larger engines, and finally steel weldments for the largest engines.

any thermal/environmental considerations in using a 5083 grade aluminum alloy for the rudder?

Dave,

What are you thinking of? Single or double plated rudder? Fully balanced, semi balanced or spade type? How many pintles? What is the material of the hull and the rudder stock? Bearing material?
Please be more specific and we can help!
