I would use a low pressure air source, and apply some back pressure to the tank, and blow out the screen. Then use an electric pump to pump out the tank.

Okay, I pulled the fuel filter at the engine and found more junk in the bottom of the canister. So I am confident there is more in the tank. I was able to contact the previous owner and he stated he had see the gas tank once before and it did have screws holding a cover over it. I made a small 2" cut in teh carpet and it was not glued down and there was a cover over where the tank was to suppose to be. I cut the carpet and sure enough there was a panel covering the tank. I think I will now try and locate a new tank and just replace this one. It looks in pretty bad shape. I tried to unscrew the line to the engine and it just won't budge.
I did try blowing some air back into the tank and it didn't help with getting gas to the filter.

Does a 20' Aztec have a cuddy cabin? It's a 1967. I'm looking at a boat on the internet and I can't tell. Thanks.

I have a 20' imp aztec. It has a small area where one person, lying down, can get out of the weather but not a cutty as such.

Thanks bill4tuna. That's kind of what I figured. How do you like your Aztec? The one I'm looking at is all geared up for salmon fishing and in very good shape. I was looking for a decent used fishing about and I stumbled on the Aztec. I've ruled it out several times but I can't stop thinking about it.

this boat is great. mine is a 1978. I added a swimstep, a bait bag, and replaced the points and plugs with electronic ignition. Runs great. solid in the ocean. easy to trailer and keep in my yard. its perfect for me. guess I will keep it forever, then give it to my son. Buy it and have some fun. Hey Everyone,
I've stumbled accross a possible diamond...err..maybe shiny rock...in the rough. The other day while doing an errand about an hour south of town in the middle of the corn fields I stumbled accross what I think is a '70 somthin' IMP Aztec. What caught me off guard was the price tag...$200 including the trailer. Thinking of the old proverb I figured it was too good to be true, but being the curious guy I am i stopped to take a gander at the goods. Turns out it's got a recently rebuilt 302 with the Mercruiser outdrive and was used last year and still runs fine. It's missing a battery and the seat cusions for the one of the rear seats but is in overall good condition other than a busted windshield and two minor scrapes on either side of the hull. After a short chat with the owner I come to find out a tornado slid the boat into their garden and really bashed up the trailer/broke the windshield. The trailer needs a little lovin' and the boat needs some cleaning but the dings on either side of the boat would be and easy fix and I think I could come up with a solution for a replacement windshield. I've read a lot about what you guys have been posting and I think this site is a goldmine for information about IMP.
So what do you guys think? Good investment worth my time...or should I not bother? I'd much appreciate some input. Thanks a bunch.

Been gone for a while, but got an update on my IMP. I got ball gears off Ebay from a business who says their kit fits all OMC stringer mounts. $300 in labor later (not solely for ball gears), the mechanic had to stop until I find a way to make my intermediate housing shaft fit the ball gear that came with the kit. Going to have to force it on and then weld it, that is the only inexpensive way to go. Seals don't fit either, so I have to search for new seals or have the seal housing machined to take the ones from Ebay. But, it does look like the end is near, one way or another. If not successful, there is a 71 Aztec in Arizona that will get parted out....

Hey everyone,
I just got a 72 IMP Aztec. It has the 225 Horse OMC. Though I'm not a big OMC fan, I don't plan on having the boat the rest of my life. I learned enough about the stringers on the last boat I owned to get me through a few years of use out of this one. A bonus is that the outdrive was rebuilt very recently and it has new ball gears. The interior was re-done by someone in the past and it looked pretty ugly. They used car seats from the front (looked like they were out of a GM vehicle), they had some crappy side bench seats and put some ugly green carpet in there. They also covered the storage locker in front of the gas tank with carpet! What the heck? that's useful space! Needless to say, I'm doing a lot of interior work, and fortunately, just a little engine work. I will keep you all updated, and any wisdom you have, I would greatly appreciate!

New to board.I own a 1973 IMP Inca 23 ft. I have spent the last 3 yrs reb uilding this boat.I quit counting after 12,000 dollars. Transom ,floors top and bottom including under engine, gas tank, cabin area.It seems over time these boats build up water in gas tank area and the water corrodes the tanks. Mine has a 83 gallon tank in it. Cost about 650. There is a place called Mattson in Fl. that builds all size tanks. I have found some good places for parts. Ebasic marine.com, Propco.com for props, iboats.com, There are a couple of dealers on Ebay that deal with OMC stringer drives . One is in Canada and one is in Arizona.I run a chevy 350,4bbl holley that is a direct replacement for the quadrajet,Indmar style exhaust manifolds instead of the logstyle. My boat loaded with fishing gear and 3 grown men will run about 30 top speed. Some quick notes, the elec. shift foot requires a special type c lube. This is for the electric coils, failure to use this can damage your coils which are expensive to buy and replace. The upper gear case can use the type c or regular high viscocity lube. Tiltdrive use regular automotive oil, straight 30 weight.Mine sits on a rebuilt trailer with new 3500lb axles and disc brakes, surge actuator.Am thinking about selling boat in the 7,000 dollar range with a complete spare outdrive and an extra foot.spare props and misc. parts. Daughter going to college. If any one has any questions they think I could help with about their boat , shoot me an email

How strange to find this site. I worked for IMP for about 6 years before taking a job building boats in South Carolina. I read the story about Jack Stewart in the Iola Register. Jack ran the parts bin when I worked there, he is a great guy. I was the plant manager for a while before working with one of the best tooling guys in the business at IMP. I see there are a bunch of questions concerning the hull layouts, bulkheads and stringer design. We did not have many blueprints or typical design layouts just hard patterns and memory. All IMP's were built with wood stringers glassed to the hull. After glassing we would drill drains in the traverse bulkheads for drainage. Sometimes grindings and trash would collect and plug the holes. The only access would be to cut holes in the floor and clean. On the 22' walk around fish boats we would use platic tanks otherwise all tanks were aluminum. in fact we used to make our tanks in-house. I would be happy to help out answering a many questions as I can. I own a 31 and a 22 fish IMP

Hi, I'm new to this site.
I have a 1978 IMP X250 with a 454 Merc./TRS.
It is in great shape and runs like a top.
50mph on the GPS.
I keep it at the Lake of the Ozarks
I bought it in May 2001. The engine had recently been rebuilt.
Since then I have replace the carpet(along with a 12x24 in. piece of the floor), the compass, added a second battery w/switch, a stereo/cd and speakers, marine radio, bimini top, cup holders, Swim platform w/ladder,and added another stripe. I lowered the stainless rail all the way around.

Ridethe93gt, to answer your question about the platform, I bought the brackets and platform at a boat junk yard and refinished the platform my self and installed it my self. They came off of an old IMP.

Hey Guys, I am new here but I also have been searching for info on the IMP boats. I bought my 1987 IMP 270 Liberty Express last year in May. I am very lucky with this one, I bought it from the origional owner, A 72 year old man that in 19 years hekept this thing inside and had only put 170 hours on this boat. So far I have not found a lot of information on these, and the few like it that I have found on the net have all been much different than mine. My boat is in excellent shape, and has always been garage kept, and the gelcoat is like a brand new boat, this boat has twin 190 hp 4 cyl. mercruisers on it w/ alpha one stern drives, the 4 cylinder engines have rochester 4 barrel carbs. this boat was equiped with factory air, but no genset. we used this boat almost every weekend last year and I love it, they are very well made boats, and very heavy, mine has a crusing speed at 21 mph @ 3,100 Rpms, and a top speed of 48.7 MPH @ 5,100 RPMs. Any way I really like this forum, and am glad to read all of your posts. I am going to try to attatch a picture of my boat.

By the way, if by chance if anyone would happen to have a owners mannual, for the 1987 270 liberty, I would gladly pay for a copy. I have recently this winter been upgrading all of the wiring in this boat, and would really like to have a mannual to go in my files. the origional owner had all of the paperwork except the mannual.

Hi:
I have owned a 1989 220 sportsman IMP since 2000.I recently repowered it with a 1995 4.3 v6,finally gave up on the 3.7 4 cyl.that came with the boat. With that engine the boat was definetly under powered,my gph went from 8.9 @3200 rpms to 8.0.I have to say this boat is un beliveable in heavy seas I have been out in 5-7 ft seas with her and she cuts right thru.most of the threads are correct imp was made in iola kansas and now have been out of bussiness since 20001.I did manage to get in touch with the home office in 2000 and they sent me the brochure on my model but that was 7 yrs. ago.i will post pics.

Hello Fellow IMPer's,
I did not get a chance to make it to the IMP auction. Does anyone out there know who bought the tooling , any of it? In case you are wondering I currenlty own tooling for an 18' and 20' center console roll top( not of the IMP vintage). I would be interested in aquiring the 23 and 255 tooling if for sale.

Is there a place online, or a person to contact, to find out what IMP I have based on serial number? Pretty sure it is an Aztec, but newer than my other one, and using the X-245 designation, but no idea on the year of it. Has dual exhausts thru the hull, something I hadn't seen before and certainly not on my other Aztec.
I have no title for this beast and got it for the trailer and to get parts for my other Aztec. The hull and deck are different enough that a lot of the trim will not fit the other Aztec. I will be hauling the hull to the landfill and don't want to have to sell for scrap aluminum all the trim pieces that others might need. It is a freshwater boat, no corrosion on the trim. SN is KL202552 in case someone can tell me exactly the model and year. thanks.

You can do what I just did, buy an entire boat for parts, strip it down and save what you need, or expect to need in the future, and junk or sell off the rest. It is by far the cheapest way to go. Only problem is finding the boat in good condition....
I am in AZ, moving to Logan, Utah soon. Mine has a chevy engine, and is an earlier year than yours, with an electric shift. Before I got this "spare parts" boat, I had to pay over $400 for JUST the upper ball gear and shaft for my boat. New Old Stock parts are very hard to find and those who have them charge a lot.

I have a '73 IMP that needs TLC. I don't know which model it is but it has the full cabin. It has a 225 HP that has been professionally rebuilt many years ago with zero time. The trailer is a tilt type. Fiberglass is good. Cabin is in good shape. Upholstery is fine in the cabin area. Exterior upholstery is shot. Needs carpet and canvas.
It's a project with solid bones.
Any interested parties give me a call.

Hello all,Im new here. I just recently found a sweet little IMP runabout ,single owner and garage kept for 41 years. She is 16ft. with a 1965 65hp. Merc outy, origanal motor Im told by the owner who bought her in kansas new. She looks a lot like a 17' Red Fish oceanic, but by 1965 red Fish was gone and IMP owned their molds. I do see some interior design carry over in the 67 aztec, but other than that I just dont see any mention of her.I have been around to all of the glass boat sites I can find ,and so far ....nothing! HI, rrumba, thanks for the reply, Hay on your boat you should find some numbers on the side of your outdrive about halfway down someware, most of the time with the boat being older someone has painted over them, So you got to look very hard. And on the engine you might find them ( or tag ) on the side of the block or towards the rear of the block? Good luck hope you find them and also I will try to find out more and let you know if I do, OK Thanks again, scott.or Cougarman

The boat is a restored 1987 21' Checkmate. The motor is a stock 87 merc 350CI 260HP 4 barrel carb I/O. The outdrive is an Alpha One with brand new lower end and gears. I'm currently spinning a Merc Mirage 23P prop and running 68MPH on GPS. I want to max the HP out to 300 for the Alpha outdrive recommended limit and get a few more MPH top end if possible. Any and all suggestions welcome !!

Enchanter,
Sorry I havent got back to you sooner, Been thinking about you and rrumba lately and trying to gather info. About yours, Have you considered putting a larger cam and lifters in your engine, and I dont know what carb you have but there's another thing to consider and a intake manifold.
Another thing is the gears and prop, Do you have a 13 1/4 x 23pitch prop? And have you tryed a 25 pitch prop? Have you talked with a local dealer about changing the gear ratio, Something to look into? Well just a couple of thoughts I hope this helps alittle. Scott

i cannot find any number on the upper or lower unit or anywhere. Very frustrating. not sure if there is even one on there. i have another question though. I am replacing the transom seal, what would be the best thing to use as a sealer under the gasket between the transom and gasket?
i think i will take some pics and see if anyone else might be able to see what my eyes are unable to.
oh, another question, i just bought a prop for her, 14x16, is this the right size? does anyone know? it is a pin type not a spline.

Ive been out working on boats,,,,,,,, On your question about sealer? I use some silacone thats made by 3M and its waterproof and its paintable, its been working pretty good as far as I know, and on your spline, have you removed your prop yet? another clue does your prop have a # stamped on it?not just pitch and dia, but a part number? this may help us determine out drive, or at least narrow it down. well good luck, Im trying to get my boat in the water this sunday for the first time, I cant wait this could be interesting,,,,,,,, have fun Scott

the guy i bought the boat from did not put the pin back in before he put it in the lake, then he started it and off the prop went. no idea what prop. from info that i have found on the web, most kinda point to a 14x16, so i hope that works. It is a pin drive. no spline.
any 3m waterproof/paintable silicone? I found one at walmart that is for marine use, but you have to use it within 48 hours because it continues to set even with the cap on. Basically from what i am gathering you just want to put something in to help seal up behind it for imperfections, like permatex 2 does for engines?
Thanks for all the help folks. Trying to put the boat in the water next weekend for the first time in about 5 years, from what the previous owner
stated.

What I have learned so far, would appreciate you experts confirming it.
Intermediate housing shafts pre 72 uses 2 roller bearings , one wider than the other. 1972 uses a tapered roller bearing with the race pressed? in to the housing. 73 and newer use a different shaft with threads on the end for a nut that keeps the ball gear on, don't know about the bearings.
And the good part, it seems that all intermediate housings, at least through 77,are interchangeable as a complete unit with shaft, ball gear, bearings, etc.
So it seems that you can take a unit from a 73-77 and upgrade your earlier units, assuming of course the motors are the same, as different brands of motors take a different shaft. One thing I am still fuzzy on, when did they change the spline count, if at all? I hear that around 77 or 78 they changed the spline count meaning you have to get the correct coupler from the flywheel as well. Again, all this is assuming you are not changing from chevy to ford, or vice versa. I know for a fact that the Ford shaft and coupler are not the same.

Hi All,
Happy to be on board.
I am (but not my wife) a proud new owner of a 1974 IMP Inca. This boat needs a lot of work. I have a few questions about it. Where can I get a breakdown on the motor and outdrive? I was trying on the Volvo-Penta website site but it couldn't find anything on the setup I have. The boat has a 280 outdrive with a 350 ci Chris-Craft marine engine with aluminum valve covers on it. The guy I bought from claimed that it would run about 55 mph, I figured he stretching it a little, but when I saw the Corvette emblem on the Chris-Craft tag ( the circle with the two crossed flags) i figured it that it could be possible.
Any information on the boat would be helpful, owners manual, history.
Thank you

You picked a good year, from 73-74 on up the parts are a bit easier to get.
Look at the numbers for the block, behind the port side head, and look that up on the internet, you may not have a 350. I have a 72 Aztec with the same valve covers, it is a 307 block, and is rated at 245HP. Is the outdrive volvo-penta? Mine is OMC, and has ball gears. If you have ball gears, be thankful your boat is as new as it is.

It has a tag on the valve cover that reads 350 and a tag that reads hydraulic lifters. The Chris Craft tag has a model # 350FLVHP.

Thanks for all your help with this, it is very much appreciated.
The reason my wife isn't so happy about it is the boat we have now runs and floats.
We do a lot of fishing on Lake Michigan and I wanted to get a bigger boat. I have been looking for a boat for about a year and when I saw this one I really liked the way it looked. We can get caught in some pretty rough water on the lake and this Inca looks like it can really take it.
Thanks again

Finally got it all back together, with exception of center glass for the windshield. Gonna have to have a frame made first.
It now has a 72 intermediate housing and shaft with the single tapered bearing. I would have preferred a 73 or newer housing and shaft, but those are not easy to come by at reasonable prices. I will keep looking, tho, now that I know how to swap them out. It isn't too bad a job to do. Smaller hands and skinnier arms would make it a lot easier.
I have a lot of extra parts available as well. Hopefully the buyer will want the extra outdrive, but if not, that will be available as well. I plan on keeping the 245HP motor (less than 600 hours) in case I can find a nice large boat in Utah that needs a motor.
We are moving to Northern Utah in a few weeks and I don't want to drag this boat up there. May have to, tho, if it doesn't sell here in Arizona. My son will have half the summer to try and sell it for me here, if that doesn't work, it goes to Utah. It will be a good boat for Bear Lake.

Well, I spent a lot of time working on the boat on Saturday. The guy I bought from said he hadn't used for three years. The way everything is rotted out on the inside, I think it was a lot longer than that. It also looks like the boat could have been partially full of water and it froze. On the outside of the boat just above the water line even with the gas tank, the fiberglass is bulged out. I pulled the cover up to look at the gas tank and the area around the tank was full of water beacause the drain to the back of the boat was plugged with junk. The motor is also siezed up. I think I will have to part it out, the motor isn't a big deal but I think the whole boat has to come apart to the bare hull and I don't have an area big enough or the time to do that sort of thing. Do you know a website that I can post parts for sale that is frequented by IMP owners? I have pictures of the gauges, shift lever, outdrive, etc that I can send to people who might be working on a boat.
I'll have to start looking for another boat (IMP hopefully). I've messed around with a few boats in the past and have never seen a boat built so well. They even have the floor of the engine compartment gel coated. I am very impressed with the construction of this boat. I don't know how someone could let a boat like this just sit and rot.

as i have a much older imp, 67 20' aztec, with a buick 300cid, 200hp engine, trying to find a parts list or diagram for the intermediate housing and identifying the model of the electric shift sterndrive is driving me nuts. do you know where i can find a parts diagram for the intermediate housing, upper gear case and lower unit?
the bearings for the drive shaft in the intermediate housing need replacing, i am sure i have to rebuild the lower unit as well as the tilt gear case since the tilt motor was rusted together and there was some sludge when i pulled it out.
Do they make a rebuild kit for the lower unit, one for the upper gear case and one for the intermediate housing?
anyone?

I was looking it over again last night, if you look down the side of the boat you can see a bulge about three feet long just above the water line and it is even with the gas tank compartment. This is on both sides of the boat. I don't really want to part it out but the damage looks pretty bad. The way the boat is built I don't think it came from the factory this way. I'll send some pictures. Maybe tonight if I have time I will take pictures of the side of the boat or a short video so you can see what I am talking about.

The boat got tied up in an estate and the paperwork was just released a couple of months ago. The hour meter has only one hour on it. Hello All!
I have had to return to the forum with a question about my 1971 IMP.
I always thought that I had a Aztec, yet I just found a handwritten note in the glovebox that says Santee. The boat is 18' and has a 6 cyl Chevy 250.
My question is this- I just tuned the engine, took the boat to the lake and suddenly it will not go into forward gear. It will shift between neutral and reverse.
I did run it on the earmuffs for about 20 minutes while setting the timing. There was a slight grinding noise while running and the boat was in neutral.
If it will help, here are my serial #s. The engine is 2835939 and the outdrive is 2826422.The boat serial # is KJ1801064.
It seems as though Mercruiser was not the drivetrain of choice, yet this is the original setup according to the owners manual that I found in the boat. The engine has about 600 hours on it.
What can I do about my shift problem? I did pull the cover off and the linkage is moving. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Jason
PS- Mike, if you read this would you please email me at desotopit@msn.com so I can try to figure out what my boat is?

Hey Scott!
I got home in time tonight to jump in the boat and take a look.
My cables are an over/under arrangement. This works off of a pivot.
I adjusted the top cable several times before the drive would engage in forward. I then brought the bottom in a little and that also helped.
The result is that I now have all three gears again BUT I cant get neutral exactly in the middle like it was on the shifter. I have to slightly go into reverse then back up to neutral.
Maybe I can get a shop to look at it but for now at least I can pull tubes and skis again! Thank! Jason

Hi All. Long time since I visited this site. Our '73 IMP Aztec is fully restored now and we've been busy fishing out of it. We started our project in '04 and called it complete early this year. Along the way we replaced all motor mounts, rebuilt the gas tank and resealed the cover, replaced the outdrive collar, replaced the tilt motor, serviced outdrive (fortunately no problems there), reupholstered seats and sides, recarpeted the deck, added a Bimini, a trolling motor, installed a bow seat and a fighting chair over the gas tank, added a depth guage/fish finder, a cd player and speakers, a Marine radio and buffed and polished the hull. All told we're into the boat for ten grand now, including purchase price. Major problem areas were the gas tank (filled with water and aluminum tank was pitted), motor mounts were all dry rotted out (took out the engine and rebuilt the deck), tilt motor (still having problems there), and rebuilding the front seats. Boat runs like a charm and we're really happy with it. This is my second IMP. Other one was a '68 IMP I purchased in '72 and it was cherry. I'm interested in the boat club too. I'll try to send some pix of the finished product. Don't have any of the restoration progress. Best of luck to you all.

Hi Karl. We had the same problem on our '73 Aztec and we ended up taking out the engine and rebuilding the deck itself. No quick fixes here. We cut out all the rotten wood and replaced it with treated 2x4's (important to keep new rot away) then fiberglassed over that. Completed the task with a coating material you buy at at Marine shop which required some sanding, but the end result is a like-new look and solid mounts. If you want detailed information on material used and man-hours involved email me at nadaboring@cox.net and I'll have my partner (who did the work) respond to you. I've got pix of our finished boat posted on the site below your original posting. Best,

Hi LaSabrea. The information you read about the Red Fish is pretty accurate and complete. For more info you might want to log on and join www.IMPBoatClub.com and post your request there. It seems a lot of the guys who used to post on this site have gone over there. The boat you have probably falls in the class of a collector's item. Don't expect to find parts or a lot of information. However, before you go to the ImpBoatClub, read all the posts in this forum and you'll find a lot of information about Red Fish. Good luck.

I bought this boat a little over a year ago in Phx, it now lives in Marina Del Rey. We had a lot of bugs to get out of the system (there are probably a couple more to be found) but what a treat it is to cruise around the harbor!
Here is a photo taken a few weeks ago, there was a classic yacht show in Marina Del Rey and they also had some classic cars. I parked the boat and then looked up to see another surprise!

Your boat is a beauty. Quite a classy lady. Would that you had the convertible in the background to pull it with, eh? Did you do the paint job or is that how it looked when you purchased it? You are right that it looks like an Apache - it might be the first photo of a Red Fish that I've seen. I'm sure you turn some heads as you cruise through the harbor. Thanks for sharing. Best regards and calm waters.

It is the same boat that you looked at. I was visiting family in Phoenix and made a U-Turn when I saw this one for sale. The owner said that it was in running condition (it was after a few $$$$). Anyway, I have been working on it for over a year and have it pretty close to done. This winter we'll replace the floor (wood rot) but everything else seems original. As far as I know this is the original color. Apparently it spent 9 years in a garage which really helped the paint.

hey everyone, brand new on forum, i just bought 77 20' inca cutty, with like new tandum trailer, will pick it up tomorrow?? she looks real good but has been out of water for several years. dealer has been real helpful in getting it ready for test drive, he has rebuilt the 4-barrel carb, and found some wiring loose in ignition. it started ,engine sounds really strong (260 350 chev merc out drive), went to put her in and lower unit would not trim , lower unit oil took care of that problem, so we again started the boat, and the mech. was unhooking from trailer, boat died, would not start, hooked her back up, and back to dealership we go. put in new battery and she started rght up, back to boat ramp, yep your right would not start, the dealer is putting on new starter in mourning, and im hoping i will get test ride. i haven't paid yet, but regardless i will buy the boat, i have owned many boats in my 67 years and this one has me more excited than all the others put together and i too. have a lot of work ahead of me . i see everyone has a problem with manuals, me too, will let you all know if i get a ride tomorrow. im sure happy i found this sight:,

jesinla - I will have to take some and get them to you. She's all covered up from the winter still (didn't take her out while I was hugely pregnant LOL). So I will work on that for you and post back ASAP.

Hi all,
I purchased my first boat last fall. It is a 1985 IMP Cuddy Cabin model X 215 SC repowered in the late 90's with a 260 HP motor and Alpha 1 outdrive. Took it out one time last year and ran into shallow water between two islands and chewed up my prop prettty badly. The boat came with several other used props and I have been looking online for more. My dilema is that the props have a series of numbers usually starting with "48" and ending with "17" or "19". I understand that the 17 or 19 refers to pitch, but what the heck do all of the other numbers mean. I believe that with my motor and Alpha 1 outdrive, that I am to use a prop that is 14 1/2" wide with a pitch between 17 and 19. Is there a chart anywhere online that explains what all of these different numbers mean? I have looked at new and used props for sale on ebay and the numbers get confusing. I tried using Google to find a Mercury propeller chart and can't find anything. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
James

There's a ton of site on the net that explains what the various numbers mean, how to choose a prop etc. See the link below to get started.

Thanks for the reply. That is a great site and their prop information is super. Still can't find out what all of the numbers mean on the Mercury props. Perhaps they are merely part numbers and have no significance as to the prop itself.

I have a 74 inca that I bought this past spring for a project. I have not been able to work on it yet and the future doesn't look good either. If anyone is interested a project boat please e-mail me and I will send you pictures. The boat has a Chris-Craft marine engine. It is a 350 with alluminum valve covers on it and the one valve cover has a Corvette emblem with the crossed flags on it. It has through hull exhaust and it has a Volovo-Penta 280 out drive.

Hello all. I just purchased a 1969 IMP Navajo Deep V Classic. This is the first boat I've ever owned. It's going to need a lot of work, but I believe it will be worth the $900 I spent on it. The hull looks to be in great shape. It's going to need to be gutted and refinished inside. That part I could handle pretty easily. Now the engine is the complete opposite. It's suppose to be a 1969 327 corvette engine. Not sure if this is true. The previous owner said he hasn't had it out on the water in about 6 years. Not sure if the motor will be any good anymore. I checked the oil and it had a little dis-coloration in it. Probably water. Hopefully it came in through the dip stick. My question is, do I spend the money rebuilding this engine or try to find a used one and stick it in? Where would I begin to look for a used marine engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've attached a few photos also. Let me know what you all think.

Hello - I'm new to this forum, and wanted to see if anyone had any insight for me. My husband is selling his 1968 IMP 18' hardtop. It's an oceanic deep V with a 185 HP Chevy V8. It runs but needs interior work. Does anyone have an idea where I could post it for sale? OR what the going prices are?
Thanks

Personally, I would try boattraders.com. It is hard to estimate the value of a boat that age and it definately depends on condition, but if it is a classic like many IMP are, you can usually get a few thousand for one.

Hi Teasdale. You've taken on quite a load. For reference as to what your boat should look like, check out the Navajo for sale just above your post. As to the engine, I'd give it a chance before I rebuilt it. Take off the heads and replace the gaskets would be my first priority. The carb might be okay with a rebuild kit, but it also might need to be replaced. But, doing the engine might be getting ahead of yourself. Check your gas tank and see what shape it's in. Drain the fuel in it and check for crud. These engines are remarkably resilient. Sometimes it doesn't take much to bring them back. We (my partner and I) purchased a '73 Aztec in '04 and our engine had not been run in years. We replaced the oil and it fired right up (with a bit of coaxing and priming) but we did have to replace our carbuerator. Our gas tank was in bad shape as was the well in which it sits. Ours of course was midship but I believe yours will beback behind the engine. These Navajo's are great little boats. The exterior paint should come back with vigorous rubbing with compounds and polishes. Remember, you have to get the gel coat warm while rubbing in order to get it back to good looking. Good luck with your project. Ours was in much better condition and I doubt we would have had the energy to tackle a project boat such as yours. But, once you get it restored you'll have a real gem and a classic boat on your hands. Best,
John

New to the site hope I am doing it right. Just purchased a 74 Imp Aztec Hard Top. Its in great shape. Does anyone know where I can purchase a motor flushing adapter. My buddy has one but finding one to buy is hard. I need one for a OMC 225 HP. The water intake is not on the sides of the outdrive but underneath. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

If anyone could tell me where I can find some numbers or a data plate on this boat it would be wonderful. It's a project boat and I'm looking forward to getting started on it.
Mine is located below the steering wheel underneath the dash. It has the load cap, serial number . Imp Aztec 21' Hardtop 1974

Hi,
New to this site.
Just purchased this boat. Seems solid enough to go down the Mississippi, Florida, and ?? !
It did not have an owners manual. It would be nice to be able to look at a floor plan, wiring, plumbing, , how much does it weigh, etc., etc..
I am in Iowa, and trying to winterize ASAP.
Is there an owners assoc. for IMP.

Hi Elto. This is probably the best place for acquiring information about IMP boats of all ages. However, you can check in at www.IMPBoatClub.com for more information. Personally, I like this place better. Easier to navigate around and easier to post replies. You have a nice looking boat. Should give you much pleasure. Good luck.

I was wondering if the trailers for these boats, were by chance made by a company called "Rolco". If so they were made in Chanute, Kansas, and there may be some of the old timers around that shop that could help you all with information on the boats, and the trailers as well.
If so, here is the information on them. They were bought out by Youngs Welding in Chanute, Ks.
Rolco Products A Division of Youngs Welding Inc.
4115 Johnson Rd.
Chanute, Ks. 66720
Phone: 620-431-1310
I live 10 miles north of Chanute, Ks (where they made/make the Rolco trailers), and 10 miles south of Iola, Kansas, where they made the IMP boats.
I know a guy that use to install engines there, for a few years, I will ask him if he remembers any of the BIG wheels names. If he does, I can post them for you. HOWEVER, the guy I know sustained a hand injury a little while back, and is trying to re-cooperate.
Hope this helps.

Hullo all, is anyone still active in this thread? I just purchased a 1984 IMP SC 190 Cuddy cabin. I would like to know more about it. I am pretty sure it has the OMC outdrive, and it is a V8, I think the 5.0L, but am not sure yet. Believe it or not, the original owners manual was in the glove compartment of the boat, but not one for the motor. Just the boat, and "general" motor operating procedures. If anyone has any more info on this boat, I'd sure like to hear from you. I'll get some pictures later.
Thanks

evenin all new to the site as i became aimp owner again today with the purchase of a 78 23 ft inca with a flybridge. the question i have is any one know how many came with the flybridge and are they able to be removed? the boat is in great shape so far with only very minor cosmetics needed on it , the trailer is great shape as well. been well kept it appears. i,m sure i,ll be here alot looking for suggestions and help. i,ve been working on restoring my last 2 wooden boats and did get finished (i think) on them and thought it was time to go to some different style of boat. hence the inca. looking forward to your help in the very near future.

The impboatclub.com website will be back up in a few weeks, I had a major heart attack last July, and was not able to keep up with the site during my rehab. Unfortunately, the discussion forum was deleted when the host I was using upgraded to new software(A lot of websites were lost in this fiasco!)
I have managed to recover most of the images, boat brochures,... but the text database is gone. I am working with a new hosting co. to get the site back up as soon as possible. I will update this post as soon as I get the site up.

hi all i did get the boat home yesterday and was pleased to get here as a 200 mile trip in a 30mph cross breeze was a trip to say the least. i looked over the flybridge removal idea and desided to just wait a bit on removing it. i think all it needs is a steering colum inline fluid tank. it,s cracked beyond repair and leaking. it did start and sounds good, came with a 351 ford windsor engine with the omc drive as well. looks like i,m going to be accepting all kinds of info and help here so thanks in advance for it.

thanks dave i had to do the old hands and knees to see it ,but got it . it was painted over a couple of times looked like. now i,m full tilt in the middle of getting back to shape now. the engine is really strong and i talked with the last owner and it looks like i,m the 3rd owner. the problem i have now is the steering. i removed the flybridge and when i saw that the 3 fluid quick connect lines under the steering pod i got lucky. i disconnected all 3 and snaked them back thru the support post as i did with the wiring harness as well.but on the bottom steering pod at the captains spot. i see they arent quick disconnect. i,m not sure what to do with the 3rd line. i have 2 lines direct from the main steering going back to the rear of the boat to steer it. the 2 lines that came down from the top steering go to each T in the fluid line that runs along the side of the boat to the rear. now i,v removed the 2 lines with the quick disconnet that lead from the top unit to the T section tie in. i unscrewed the lines and just put caps on each line at the T. now i,m not sure waht to do with the 3rd line that comes from the top unit. it goes directly to the bottom steering unit with no disconnect at the lower unit.i filled the lower steering unit back up with fluid as it was low and it brought back all my steering and i found out the main steering head is leaking like crazy right where the steering wheel connects. lookes like a seal or crack cant tell for sure. i dont know what to do with the 3 rd line that is connected to the main steering wheel as i dont see any way to remove it without cutting it off? any ideas. if need be i can be reached at 913-766-8606 pretty much anytime 11 to 7 every day . central time,,,thanks for the help ....

you need to find a stand single station steering setup, through a boat salvage yard, is the best bet, does not have to come from an I.M.P., just has to be OMC, and same year. make sure cable and line lengths are right for your boat, these came varying from 14 ft to 32 feet depending on the application
btw, i wish i had the funds, id have you ship that flybridge to california, would work well on the hardtop i am building for my Aztec

I have a 1967, 20ft aztec, i believe, with a 200hp, 300cid, buick stringer. it appears that this is a year that is hard to find parts for. it has not ran in several years and figure i have to rebuild the outdrive and int housing at the very least. This model year also has the round transom seal. There are a few soft spots in the floor by the engine the i have to get fixed and find a new gas tank for her as well. I would rather keep her all original, but is it worth trying to find another engine int housing and outdrive and swap all out instead of trying to rebuild the current one? the engine is not seized up, it turns but will not start as i need to find a new carb for it due to water damage in the bowl. If anyone can provide any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. trying to get it in the water at some point this summer. i am capable of fixing engines and such but know nothing about what leg will fit what int housing to team up with what engine. I have little stress cracks in the gel coat also, what would be the best way to fix this or do i need to do a new gel on the entire thing?

Have you considered going to standard power steering, with cable from helm to power steering assist, your int housing is basically set up for that, you would lose some of the silkyness of the hydraulic steering, but would lose most of the headachs too.
as for the bridge, im droolin, but having not worked in a year, budget is too tight.ouch i hate passing up on this

03-05-2008, 12:33 AM
yes sir we looked at that way on the power assist and it wasnt in the budget. almost the same to convert as to buy a new helm. only 90 bucks difference. i think i have a line on the helm cover in the works. a young man in calif. at a salvage place thinks he has one and is looking first thing in the morning and will call me hopefully. he knows how desparate i am on this thing. we shall see. to bad about the flybridge thing i would have like to see it go to a good home so to speak. i ,ll hold it for a few more days. the weather here is in mid 30,s this week and not real productive as to being out working on the boat.

does anyone know how many lines i need to hook up my hyd. steerimg helm. my old one had 3 lines to the back of the helm and the replacment one i found has hook ups for 4 lines if needed but all of the plans i have found on installation shows only a 2 line hook up. i have a port and a starboard and 2 openings that are marked with a "R" on them. i,m assuming thats a return line. i saw the steering ram on the stearn has all 3 lines going into a block kinda thing with a line then going to a port side and the other to the starboard side of the ram. not sure if i even need the 3rd line or to just plug it off or to plum it in to the "R" fitting on the helm? any ideas?

My guess, and it is only a guess would be to plumb the port and starboard, and the one return line, and plug off the unused return, this would be used in a dual ram system

thanks dave for the ideas. i gave it a shot and nothing happened so we just plumbed the port to port and starboard to starboard and it seemed to be ok i think i,ll need to bleed it out still but at least i have most of my steerinfg back now. thanks again

Did you by any chance buy this boat in Texas? Reason I ask is that recently a beautiful and mint condition '72 IMP Aztec Hardtop was advertised for sale on ebay but the first time it didn't get to the reserve price, and the second time no one bid on it. Had I hit the lottery I would have bought this boat in a heart beat. My own '73 IMP Aztec is not hardtop. Anyway, I'm just curious.

Kujawa, our IMP also has the gas tank in the middle of the boat - aft. We took it out and it was riddled with small pits and even some that penetrated the skin through to the inside of the tank. We decided to patch ours. Used JB Weld and that was three years ago. We scraped and sanded the pits before applying the weld. We check the tank about every three to four months and it's holding just fine. Also had to replace our carbuertor too. One that was on it was bad and besides which, it was an automotive carb. Eventually we had one put on at a shop and the price tag was a grand. But, the engine runs great and purrs like a kitten. One thing to check with your new boat is the motor mounts. Quite often these old boats have bad wood under the mounts and if you run the boat a lot you can damage the outdrive if there is movement in the engine under power. We cut out our wood on both sides, replaced the wood then glassed over the deck. Really looks nice and is very strong. Good luck with your IMP. Here's what our boat looked like when we finished with it, but before we added a trolling motor and a chair on the bow.

The way my aztec was constructed, the stringers had openings in them, presumably for drainage. these openings are @6" long, and 3" high. I Through bolted a pair of steel plates on top of the stringers,Through these openings. after locating the motormount holes, I drilled, and welded threaded studs in these spots. now, the plates are very firmly anchored, and can remove the engine multiple times with out fear of stripping the lags to create a walking motor situation.
Your stringers need to be in good shape, not rotted, for this, but once done, no more worrys. the 1/2 inch heightgain caused by the plates did not affect the mounting, boot, or operation of the boat.

Dave, it's a great fishing platform. So much room in the boat and on the bow. I feel like I'm sitting in my living room when I'm up there moving the boat along. We're (my partner in the boat and I) heading to Lake Powell Sunday for a week of fishing. I'll take pix of what we catch and post them here when we get back. Meet you up there, right?

By the way, did you notice we took out the stern seats on each side of the engine cover for more storage room. I hated to do it but my partner, who fishes back there, insisted. Also BTW, there's a beautiful '73 IMP Aztec Hardtop advertised on ebay right now and until May 1. It's cherry and ready to go. I don't have use for another IMP other than for bragging rights but I'm tempted.

Dave, I sometimes wish we had gone for an Inca instead of the Aztec. Both are great boats. We felt the Aztec would be easier to fish from so went that route. Because of all the ailments our IMP had when we bought it, we named it the IMPatient. I see your Inca is IMPulse. I believe man cannot have too many bungee cords, friends or IMPs. Best,

I'm way too old to be starting any more project boats. The IMP we own is the last boat I'll ever have. My partner and I have a last man standing agreement. If one dies, the other has sole ownership. If I were to lose my partner, imagine I'd put the boat up for sale. He's in Vegas and I'm in Phoenix. A long distance arrangement but it works for us.

I believe someone else has posted Mike's name and numbers on this forum, but I'm going to put his info here again. I was at Lake Powell this past week when my OMC outrdive failed. I was fortunate enough to find Mike and he repaired the outdrive (rebuilt it actually). Total cost was $2,300 for new water pump, new ball joints, replaced lower unit, new seals, replaced some shafts and much more. Mike has a treasure trove of parts available for OCM outdrives. He is also extremely knowledgeable about IMP boats. Contact him for parts or for information about your IMP problems: Mike's Marine - 928-645-5549, 1-866-274-9196. I used to work for IMP boats in Iola Ks. many years ago. At the time I started I didn't realize there were so many out there. The craftsmanship that I put into every boat I built was of the upmost care. I did the engine installs and all the wiring. There was about 15 people that built the boats and we all took pride in what we did. We built some wild boats. I recall one that had twin 454's. It was a thrill to crank it up after I finished all the wiring. I signed a few boats that I built. I wanted to see if I could locate them when I was older. I worked there from late 98 to early 2000. If anyone has one from these years look under the dash or on the radio. They closed down in 2000 at the Iola plant.
My wifes Dad worked there in the 70's to mid 80's. I dont know what he did there but I know that he was the best at what he did there. I just wanted to pass this alog to all of you who own an IMP Boat. Wayne

Hey fellow IMPers,
I own a '73 Aztec that I'm in the process of fixing after it was hit by a tornado a few years ago. I bought a '72 hardtop without engine to use for parts. I was hoping the windshield would fit my '73 but the deck in different either between the years or the hard top/walkthrough. Be that as it may, I've tracked down a walk-through windshield to replace the original one that was destroyed in the tornado. I now have a hard top windshield in very good shape available. When I say cheap I mean free. If you need one it's your's. No way I can ship this thing as it's heavy and one complete unit. Send me an email jwelty(at)everestkc(dot)net and I'll give you all the details I can about size. This windshield is located near Hermitage, MO and will need to be picked up.

Hi IMP fans. I'm have an 76 Imp Aztec in really good, all original condition. Just turned 800 hours on the Ford 351C, quietest engine i've ever had. Starts instantly, idles nice. Refinished hull, polished teak, all blue vinyl in very nice shape. The rear backrest is lighter blue and has some black spotting. Could use new carpet in the next few years. Still using every weekend.
The only thing not working is the trailer tilt. I can trailer and lauch as is, so have not had looked at. Comes on original trailer in good shape, some surface rust, good rubber, bearing buddies. Have two covers and teak swim deck that i haven't installed.
Feels solid, trailers nicely. Had new bellows about 5 years ago, full tuneup 2 years ago. Takes a minute to plane but will roll along at about 25 mph at 4000 RPM. We never really push this boat.
We've had bowriders and cuddies, and we're always amazed how roomy this 20 footer can be. Come to beautiful Madison, Wisconsin and test drive. I will try to assist with delivery in the midwest as possible.
Lots of pics available. Tried to attach, but here is the cragislist listing: http://madison.craigslist.org/boa/720440242.html

It's a '86 with a '92 5.7 OMC cobra outdrive. All I can say is it's built like a brick, I've had it in some rough weather. It's really heavy so the speed is down from what you would expect, but all in all a very solid boat. I don't have a side shot on this computer but I'll see if I can find one when I get home tonight and post it. I am very surprised to see that there are so many IMP boats around, when I bought this one I could hardly find anything on them except that they used to be built in Kansas and the quality was high.

Got a quick question.
I have a 23' IMP, not sure which one.
My question is about the foam in it.
I have been rinsing it out, and it keeps dripping for days, just slowly draining. I am wondering if I need to replace the foam, and more importantly, how do I do that. It doesnt look like a fun job. I would hope to go through the live bait tank in the middle of the boat, so I don't have to tear up the floor.
Help me with suggestions please. You can email me , it is in my profile

I am a relatively new owner of a 1987 IMP 22 FISH. I bought the boat last December as a project (it was in rough shape) and took it out last weekend for the first time (everything ran well). During the winter I noticed a spot on the hull that was delaminating and had a bunch of spider cracks around it, I repaired with West System Epoxy. A couple nights ago I was thinking that I haven't noticed any pictures of IMP boats on roller trailers and was wondering if anyone knows if the manufacturer discouraged the use of roller trailers. I'm wondering if the trailer could be putting too much pressure on the hull and causing damage. Sorry, I dont have any specific pictures of what's going on with the hull.

Wow dpenn1, looks like you did great on your project. That's a great looking boat. Interesting question on the trailer. I have a Shoreland'r roller bunk trailer and I love it. Unloading an loading is so easy it's stupid. Even my wife can crank the boat up with little effort. And launching is just get the tires in the water, and a gentle push and off she goes. My problem is, my boat is right at the limit of the max weight of the trailer. I only have a single axle and the tires always look like they are low, even when they are spot on 50 pounds. I really need a tandem axle, and would love to get another roller bunk. Maybe it's just an adjustment thing on yours??? The Shoreland'r rep told me that they custom adjust the bunks to fit your boat after purchase of a new trailer (same thing with a McClain I looked at...but not a roller bunk). Otherwise I don't know why a roller bunk would cause any more damage than a standard bunk. Anyone else???

Thanks Edjunior, I appreciate the comments. I do need to adjust the trailer, the boat didn't go on straight when I loaded it last weekend. I think it's been a problem for a long time because when I bought the boat the bow wasn't centered in the bow stop and the bow stop was damaged. The trailer had quite a few problems when I got it. I repaired the problems I could see including replacing all of the rollers. I was going to make adjustments over the winter but I thoguth I should get the engine and drive back in place and get it loaded with fuel (100 gal tank) before fine tuning. Looks like I'm ready now, Care to bet on how many bolts will break off in the process?
pdave1s
07-28-2008, 12:42 AM
Ed
Make yours a tandem,(call me, can get you going in the right direction) find a junker tandem trailer, remove both axles, and the axle hanger frames. Center the two axle on the orig center of single axle, and your adjustment is close, you want them just a little farther back from where the trailer tends to fishtail. As for roller versus bunk, If you examine a heavy boat on a bunk trailer, you will notice the bunks are bowed away from the hull between supports. A bunk style trailer usually has fewer supports than a roller trailer, (you decide, bunks also tend to ""Hook"" a hull)especialy a good roller traile mfg like Caulkins. Me, Iv'e owned both and prefer a good roller trailer, coupled with a 2 speed winch with brake(steep ramps require it)

Been looking for an IMP for some time and I think I found one. 1976 Aztec
20', with 225 OMC drive. It's been stored inside for the life of the boat and has 177 hours on it. Interior looks brand new, but is orgional. Owner wants $5,000 for boat and trailer. It just seems a little high for a 32 year old boat.
I have a test ride scheduled for next week, to check everything out, but question finding parts for the OMC drive, I have not read a lot of good things about the electrict shift models. Any feedback anyone could give on cost and parts would be greatly appreicated

you can always upgrade to a later omc 800 cable shift drive, direct bolt in, and control modification. me if the elec shift is working good, run it yill it dies, then upgrade. as for the price, if it runs out as good as it sounds, yo cant find a better all around boat. especialy in rough water.

Bought an Aztec a few weeks ago that had been donated to a charity because it would not start.
Turned out to be the screen at the fuel pickup tube was clogged with silicone. It looked like someone had used a lot of silicon on the fuel sending unit gasket and the excess had fallen into the tank. I am in the process of changing the non functional sending unit and replacing the electric fuel pump that was burned out.
Did a 73 come with an electric pump or was it only mechanical? I am guessing the mechanical is non functional and the pump is forcing fuel past the diaphram.
It was an experience pulling the access plate to the fuel tank off. The caulk was pretty solidified.

To my knowledge tha year used mechanical pumps. As to looking fo a ne IMP, maybe later, had 2 projects dropped in my lap this mont, a 1977 searay sdb 240(House on water), na d a 1975 glasspar cutlass open bow. The Ray needs and enine and oudrive, but would be worth restoring, unportunately I dont have the room, so i will probably part it out. The 75 glasspar urns, needs a water pump impeller, but the whold interior is in shambles due to over exposure to the sun. I plan on selling the engine I built for the Aztec, and using funds from that to aquire an upholstery sewing machine, and redo th glasspar's inteir my self, and maybe a new bussiness at the same time. If all goes well, I will be looking for an AZTEC, or INCA in the not so far future.

I prefer the side boarding ladder that the early Aztecs used, helps keep the person in the water totaly away from the outdrive. Having to hang it over, or stow it helped remind me to shut down during boarding/disembarking swimmers!! see attached photo, It used a thru deck bracket that the ladder post dropped into.

Thanks for the suggestion Boatsmith. That may be a better idea than the swim platform. My only problem with the side ladder option is this particular boat doesn't have a good place for ladder placement. i.e. see photo. I have always shut down my motor when loading or unloading passengers, just habit. Hopefully I will figure out the best solution for this. Thanks again.24336

I am having a frustrating problem replacing the fuel sending unit on the 73 Aztec. I pretested the new marine sending unit before I cut the length of the rod with the float (in specs) and also tested the ohm readings with the sender set loosly in the tank. (It measured 145 ohms). When I fastened it to the tank with the screws the reading dropped to 40 ohms. The reading was without the wires hooked up to the sender. I pulled it back out to double check the readings and it was in spec again. Refastened the unit, hooked up the black to the -- and the pink to the S side. Turned key on and 10 seconds later the key was hot and the # 3 fuse blew out. (ignition?) SFE 14A
I am guessing I have either a dead short or not enough of a ground to the tank.
Anyone have any idea what is going on here?
Hello!
I just picked up my first I/O and it happens to be a 1973 IMP Pawnee with a Chevy 305. I'm looking forward to playing around with this boat. It seems to be well built. I've been doing a lot of work to it to get it ready for the lake. I'm drain the fuel tanks right now to put fresh fuel in them.
Does anyone know how much fuel this thing holds? The previous owner did not know. He just used one tank and put in a little at a time. He seemed to think it held 24 gallons but after looking at the location of the fuel tanks I think he may have meant 24 gallons per side.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Congrats on the boat rs2k. I'm not sure about the fuel either, but I would have to agree with you. I have not filled mine up yet, but have gotten it between 1/2 and 3/4 (starting with just less than 1/4 tank) adding approximately 20 gallons. That's telling me that mine is at least 40 gallons, probably more like 50 or 60. Mine's in an '84 X 190 SC (used to be called a Commanche) 19' Cuddy.

Looking at your boat, the side mount ladder would fit right between your drives, youd just have to remember to bring it inboard before starting the engines(you could also mount it on the bow!). I dont see that you have the room for a regular platform.
Good luck

Nice looking boat Tom. I have the 1984 X 190 SC. Little to no literature out there right now. Dave from the old IMPBOATCLUB site has some, but even he doesn't know what all he has yet. A lot of it seems to be from the earlier years, when they actually had names (Aztec, Inca, etc.,). On the spec plate inside mine (on the wall under the steering wheel), it is also referred to as a "Comanche", which was the name before they quit using the indian names. The "SC" in mine refers to "Super Cuddy", and of course the numbers are the length of the boat.
So what engine do you have in there? Any other details?
Here's just a very little more information about your boat. Very little:
http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-24-38-5694-0-0-0&l=1&w=24&p=38&f=5697&m=0844&y=1983&ml=I&z=77357&gc=MR>c=MR&d=1600092239
Looks to be the 350 engine with 260 HP. Nice. Also, since there is no SC designation, I would assume they only made that model in cuddy cabins.
Welcome, and enjoy.
P.S. Dave will have the IMPBOATCLUB website up and running again soon, reincarnated as "BOATREBUILDING.COM". Stay tuned.

edjunior,
Thanks for the info. She has a 350 which I just got running last weekend...the first time out was awesome! I will look under the steering console for some more info. I'm also parts... she has an OMC and the tilt motor need to be rebuilt or replaced. Any ideas where to shop? Attached are a few more pics.
Thanks,
Tom

Heh, looks very similar to mine Tom! The plate I'm referring to looks to be at teh bottom right of your steering console, directly to the right of your stereo. Should have the passenger limit info, max weight info, etc.
As for the tilt motor, E-bay is a good place to find that stuff, and also check out this one:
http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12488/12488.shtml
That will actually get you to the boards, but you can also register there and post what you are looking for and someone will help you out. Up at the top though, on the left side is an icon with "Engine Parts". You can start your search there. Someone on the board there might also have the part you're looking for.
I'll post a couple of pics of the inside of my boat and you can see the similarities. Pretty amazing. Yours looks in very good condition by the way. Nice and clean too.
Good luck with it, and keep us posted here.

Ed,
With the lower unit in the down position and the tilt motor not working...can you suggest how to raise the lower unit to be able to trailer it home for the winter months? The guy I purchased it from traileredd it to my place at the lake and that's the way she sits...not sure if I mentined this before, but this is my first boat.
Thanks,
Tom

Does anyone know if a short in a tach would cause the engine to shut down when reaching certain RPMs?
edjunior

Tom,
Dunno about your tach problem. It sounds kinda odd for that to happen though. I would tend to think you have a problem somewhere in the engine that is causing it to shud down after reaching certain RPM's. But I don't know enough to give you an answer to that.
As for your tilt motor problem, check out this thread:
http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12488/149967.shtml
This is also another good board for information. This particular sub board is for OMC Sterndrives. Lots of good info and lots of knowlegeable folks there. I would suggest you join it and check it also, in addition to this one.

Need help with a 1993 310 Eleganza. I have a 1993 310 Eleganza and am wanting to upgrade the appearance to resemble the newer 330 Vipers. From what I see it’s just a windshield change. The hull looks as if IMP used the same hull design until they went out of business. Can anyone tell me the difference between these boats and if IMP subbed out the manufacturing of the plastic parts (i.e. windshield, cabin door, roof hatches, etc) and if so who that company might have been? Thanks in advance, JD

Ed,
Sorry it too so long to reply. Trying to get finished with some work on my feet so I can address my winter projects. With this being my first IMP...and boat that is not a pontoon...is it difficult to change lower units from one manufacturer to another? Still waiting on pics of your boat. Can you recommend somewhere to see pics of different models of the IMPs...specifically 1983? I've been on craigslist all over the country and have seen many IMP boats, but it seems that there is a trend on the year, and model of the boats.
Thanks,
Tom

Sorry Tom. Kinda lost track. And as luck would have it now, Ike came to town and I'm without electricity. We faired pretty well all things considered, no damage to any of my property, but no power. I'm at work right now, and my only connection to the outside world (even cell phone is spotty). But I'll get back to this as soon as I can.
By the way, I don't think you're going to find much else on the IMP boats other than what we have here. I know Dave has some brochures and stuff, but I'm not sure what all he has (I don't even think he knows what all he has yet). He will post them as he can get around to it.

Ed,
Hope all is well after Ike. He made it all the way up here with damage...I have run into a listing for an imperial boat that looks just like my 83 X223...Same layout...Thoughts?

No idea Tom, sorry.
We're doing okay all things considered. We'll still be without power for another 3 - 5 weeks (we lost a main power station). But as long as I can keep gas in the generators, we'll do okay. I heard Ike even caused power outages up in the Northeast (Connecticut!)!! Ike was a bad boy for sure.

For OldTiger and Bearer. Our '73 Imp Aztec came with mechanical and electric fuel pumps. We eliminated the electric one as being superflous and have had no problems. As for OMC outdrive parts, contact Mike Sullivan at 928-645-5549. He lives in Page, Arizona and is Mr. OMC Outdrive as far as anyone up there is concerned. He has owned IMP's and worked on them for many decades, knows them inside and out. He has a pretty substantial parts inventory and can help you out. Mike will generally answer questions from IMP owners too so invest in the long distance call and see if he can help. We had to replace the lift motor for our OMC outdrive and I believe I found the part through Google. It was a bit over a hundred dollars. Pay attention when replacing that motor as there are some shims to worry about. I'd definitely have someone look over the upper and lower unit to see about pumps and seals and bearings. If you don't have evidence a previous owner did that, then certainly check it out. Check out your motor mounts. IMP's are notorious for wood rot around the motor mounts. No problem if you find rot there. Just cut out the old wood, add new wood. Glass it and then coat it. It's labor intensive but worth it. Running an engine with loose or wobbly motor mounts can screw up your shaft to the outdrive. On the fuel sending unit, I'd suspect a ground wire has broken. OldTiger, if that IMP at $5 grand is in really good condition, it's a bargain. We paid $3200 for ours but with repairs, replacements and add-on's we're topping ten grand now. That doesn't count what our labor is worth. If your boat is the one I saw advertised in Texas it is probably a pretty good boat. Good luck to everyone.

Need to add here that my '69 IMP Aztec did not have an electric pump. The one on our '73 was an add on. As to changing out the electric shift control, I'm not sure these are interchangeable. If yours is working good, then hang on to it. It's nearly impossible to find replacement units. Our IMP needs the handle on top of the shift lever - can work it without it - but I'd like to find one so the boat is complete. It's a cosmetic thing. I've posted pix of our IMP previously, somewhere around page 26.

It can be done, if your electric shift is mid 70's(it can be done for earlier models too, but requires major transom surgery) or later, but it aint cheap. Basicaly you need the cable shifter, shift converter, and an omc 800 series drive. (I know of the complete package for sale, with or without a 0 hour (full rebuild and valve job) ford windsor 235 hp omc.)

Sorry Ed, the boat rebuilding site won"t let me register, I have sent E-Mails to the site administrator twice and never recieved a reply. I am sure it's a great site. I guess I'll just have to stick with the boat design net and pick up what I can on IMP boats.

Well, the administrator is right above you there (Dave). He'll see this and take action. And I guess we'll take our information wherever we can. John up there (NadaBoring) had a great post. Some good info from him.

Jersan,
I will set up a login for you, and send a temp password. I have just recently changed to the same software this site runs, and am still learning the settings. It is notes like yours that helps me sort it out.
Hey Ed, wasup? Heard you got a bit wet, p.i.a, no power, hope all else is well

Yeah Dave, got a bit wet indeed. Ike was not nice. However, we were quite fortunate compared to others. We got power back on Friday afternoon (19 Sep). Lost it again briefly, but has been on since. We had no vehicle damage or property damage. Just lots of tree branches, limbs, and leaves everywhere. Others in the neighborhood did not fare so well. Quite a few took trees on their houses...blue tarps on a number of houses. Down south was quite a bit different. Bolivar Penninsula (where my stepdad lives) was almost wiped from the map. His house (and his neighborhood) actually did okay, compared to most of the penninsula. All the houses are on stilts there, and all the lower levels were completely washed out. But the main living areas "seemed" to come thorugh. Can't get back there yet to check though. His boat was taken right out of his boat house and blown 2 houses down and deposited near his neighbors garage/driveway. Pretty amazing for a 21' Sea Swirl Cuddy Cabin with a 150hp Johnson! The cuddy top was ripped right off...he now has a convertible.
Anyway, life is "almost" back to normal. I still don't have internet/phone at home, but all else is well. I consider myself very fortunate, considering the eye went right over the top of my house.
