Being the guy in boat school interested in designs like Trekka (John Guzzwells 20 footer) and mini transats and whatnot, I repeatedly heard about the scale effects of stability.

I am wondering if this has to do with dynamics which we didn't study, rather than statics which we did.

Thinking about reducing the loa of a 28 footer by 7% (26' - all other particulars equal) but don't have any real basis, other than the ominous echo of "scale effects on stability" to tell me whether this is a horridly bad idea.

From: "Principle of Yachtdesign" - Larsson & Eliasson

According H.M. Barcla the scaling of a hull wil effect the BM and GM as follows:

BM = L^0.72
GM = L^0.45

L being 'original lenght/proposed lenght'

These relations depend to some extent on the basic model!

Hope this answers your question.
