Fiberglass Oil Tank

Hi all,

Im tryig to make fiberglass oil tank, i just wanna make sure if i can use the GP resin or the iso marine resin .. any better idea !!
i have made one before and i used the iso resin and woven 800 one layer and 450 one layer its working .. but some friends said its wrong you have to use better resin than the iso resin :?:

oh yes i also i need help with paint remover for the antifouling , the bottom paint.. here is the pic att .. it take time to remove the paint and its thicks paint killing my time to remove it :mad:

I have made many fuel tank for motorcycles from GRP.

The technique was to shape what ever very difficult shape was required from cheap blue foam.
Then paint the exterior of the plug with west 2 part epoxy (only recomended as it was avilable from other projects).
Pollyester resin disolves the foam ,so the epoxy is used as surface barrier layer.

When cured the plug would be covered in laid 3/4 oz mat (with cloth as reinforcement at mounting lugs etc) no roving is ever used.

When cured the gas fill is used to pour in old battery acid.

This completly disolves the internal foam plug.

AS a precaution an aircraft wing tank sealer (Aircraft Spruce source) is poured in to seal any pin holes.

Since this works for gasoline , it should work for oil too.

Dear Saeed,
You may use a good grade of ISO resin for fuel oil.just make sure the inner layer contacting the fuel oil has at least a layer of resin rich veil cloth followed by two mat fiberglass. reserve the WR in the outer layer.If it is a large tank, abovegroung or underground, it must be stress analyzed to prevent leaking.

Why do you want to remove the old paint? If it is not flaking, just paint over it.

Say the bottom paint wasn't peeling but, you wanted a super smooth finish for show. Is one paint stripper better than another for removing 20 years of bottom paint on a fiberglass hull?

I've used Star-10 paint stripper on bottom paint for years, the only product I've found that will remove all the layers of paint at one time (no I don't sell the stuff<g>). The stuff just works. Have to do a web search for Star 10 products to find it though.
