View Full Version : Where Are The Women
Wynand N

Hi everyone :)
Are there any women in this forum :?: Or are we just a bunch of MCP's?
Women are quite active in other forums (Cruisers Forum comes to mind). Surely we can do with a few of them around, always nice to have a womans perspective as well, even how crooked it may be.

Now that you bring it up, I don’t think I have ever run into any women in the business of design except for Charles Street’s daughter who worked at S & S. Are any women attending the schools of yacht design such as the Landing School or YDI in Maine.?

This is an issue we often talk about in enginnering circles. But due to the reverberations of the 80's feminist movement it's considered bad form to highlight differences between the ability of sexes. It seems that it's suddenly OK to talk about this with a number of recently released books such as "Brain sex.." and "The difference..."
It's got something to do with the physiological differences in the brains between men and women. The male brain is considerably better at 3d mental perception (tests suggest up to 25 % better). The term "spacial ability " that refers to the brains ability to model complexity, leads to mens dominance of fields such as music composure, chess, complex 3d engineering design.
It's not that women can't do it, it's just that men find it naturally easier due to brain physiology. Our society naturally favours the more gifted in any discipline so we end up dominating certain fields.

the organised and forced harassment through female seductresses:eek:
You have to read the Penguin thread to get the joke.:p

Have to say there is some real hot french and italian chicks on the yacht design course I'm on... The ultimate chat up line is 'I've got the use of *boat name* this saturday, any of you girls fancy a sail?'. You just can't beat sailing on a sunny day with three fine young ladies on a quick sportsboat...
Hmmm can I rub that in anymore?

OH, OH, my manhood has been questioned.
Seriously, though, there isn't always an indication of gender. For all we know, there are many women in the forum that prefer not to advertize it. I think in the new generation of sailors, there are a lot more girls than they used to be. They are also more participating in active roles instead of just going for the ride.
safewalrus
12-26-2005, 12:47 PM
Gonzo, that final sentance really has me confused  - "more participating in active roles instead of just going for the RIDE!" That plus the comment as about boys seems very interesting and thought provoking!
And with that in mind if you were a girly would you admit it??
gonzo
12-26-2005, 04:08 PM
Firstly, I make a very ugly girly. Secondly, women used to be mostly either passangers or "first mate". That is changing(the second part only)
safewalrus
12-26-2005, 07:00 PM
whew glad about that Gonzo! Mind you sailed with a woman 'Captain' comercially some years back - intersting to note that the 'Captain' of a merchant vessel is called a 'Master' the feminine of which is 'Mistress' reakoned she wernt one of those (her words! Mmmmm)

Course 'Cactus Kate' showed up for all of 5 minutes....before the whiff of my testosterone got her all uppitty and she shot thru! :D ;)
I dunno _ I reckon thats half the appeal of this place - juts like escaping to sea to get away from she who must be obeyed - you can skive off to Boat design.net and get away from 'her indoors' (previously referred to as "she who mistakenly thinks she wears the pants!").
Soo..
Do we really want the wimmin in the industry? or here for that matter!
Now if it was the hot little number that paddles the blue canoe past my place every morning - then all bets are off - and I saw her first!:p
Cheers!

01-31-2006, 05:46 AM
Marshmat - how are you buddy?:) - the few women I have come across in the industry are all really good engineers, think it is something to do with the fact that women have to be 1.5 times as good as the normal male in the first place to be put into senior positions, which is not an attemp at my opinion of what is right, just an observation of fact. I think it also has to do with their right to take mega time off when the kids come along which is hard from an employer's point of view regardless of what anyone says if they want to take up this option.
Fair play to them I say and good luck.....

Vega - (I know this is a boat forum guys but grant me a little license to briefly reply about cars just for a second), the MR2 is nice but a little square and sporty for me, I have had a few Toyotas in the fleet and they are super reliable cars, I have a few cars but my favorite is without doubt the Jaguar for looks, now that has curves, not the best car in the world but completely beautiful to my mind, and yes, I think it looks like a stunningly beautiful woman, I just wonder which boat resembles most the timeless elegance and quality of the breed, the sound, the quality every time you close the door............what do you think?
boltonprofiles
02-03-2006, 09:03 PM
Have you seen Michael Kasten's car design at www.kastenmarine.com by the way.............
my favorite is without doubt the Jaguar for looks, now that has curves, not the best car in the world but completely beautiful to my mind, and yes, I think it looks like a stunningly beautiful woman, I just wonder which boat resembles most the timeless elegance and quality of the breed, the sound, the quality every time you close the door............what do you think?
Just once, not to be unpolite, let's talk about cars: Yes I agree with you, the Sports Jaguar is a nice looking car...even if I would gladly exchange it by an old E type, the one from the late 60's...now, that one is a timeless beauty with lot of curves and all in the right place:
http://membres.lycos.fr/rvmarg99/telechar/jaguar_e_1024.JPG
About the Mr2, that's a complete different story. It was a car made by Toyota engineers as a work study in their own time, not a production car and it happened that, at that time, Toyota was just interested in putting a more sporty look to its image (Formula 1 and all) and surprisingly has produced a car that is completely atypical from its "normal" production. It’s really a sports car (central motor), with less than 1000kg and amazing brakes that can give you (in an open and deserted road mountain or on a track) a joy ride and lots of fun.
The car has an incredible number of after market pieces designed for it, that go from full body kits to turbos. Mine has tuned up chassis, TTE and Koni suspensions (and a lot more) and in some time it will have a TTE designed turbo - 0/100km/h in about 5s (TTE are the guys that make the Toyota F1). It is also an inexpensive car, at least before you start adding and modifying things, and it is not an uncomfortable one.
I also like its looks:

But if you don't like it, you can always change it:D :

Hey Katch, in Europe the only place where you can drive in the freeway without almost falling asleep is in Germany, where there are no speed limits ...the Germans drive very well and the outside lane is almost always free.
People just pass the car in front and return to the other lane...almost all, except the guy in the Porsche SUV that didn't get out of my way. We rolled at about 190km/h when I saw in my mirror a real Porsche coming fast. I changed lane, let him pass and returned to the fast lane on his back. The real thing stayed on the back of the SUV for about 3 minutes and then, very slowly changed to the inside lane, passed the ugly thing, went to the fast lane....and made a huge burn out :D before disappearing in a cloud of smoke. I guess that the guy in the SUV got the message cause he finally got out of my way:cool:

I look forward to see soon your designs in these forums. Enjoy the Landing School.
By the way, I have two NA girls working with me at the office. Excellent professionals, as well as work-dedicated and loyal people. Much more better things to say of them than of the NA boys I've employed (and fired) before.
(Well, as a matter of fact I have 4 people working with me, and they are all women)
Hei Guillermo, you are full of surprises.:p
Please post the links to those drawings or boats, I want to see them too.

...Course 'Cactus Kate' showed up for all of 5 minutes....before the whiff of my testosterone got her all uppitty and she shot thru! :D ;)...
Not only Kate, but Leo Lazauskas too. Just see Kate's thread and you'll find him saying goodby. And it's a real pity as he was a really knowledgeable man who had posted most interesting contributions. I wrote him and he told me he was no longer interested in participating in a Forum were people were more concerned with their own bizarre personalities than in sharing useful information, after your most clever posts at that thread... Thanks a lot, Trouty.

At the risk of alienating quite a few members with thin skins, Guillermo, and as probably one of the 'offenders' I should point out that much of 'humour' originates from those members who have lived and worked at sea, rather than the 'weekenders' and drawing-board mariners (but none-the-less valuable members) who only occasionally 'dip' their toes in the brine.
A rough humour (hard to remove) becomes a patina for those who have spent much of their life in wet clothing, hearts in mouth, and on a diet of mildewed rations. Survival comes through not taking anything, except the essential, seriously. Walrus for one, and myself for another, I know have been working seamen - and paid our rites of passage. We have the practice and not just the theory.
However, should the more diletente members wish it, I for one will, with regrets, withdraw from this forum. :(

..A rough humour (hard to remove) becomes a patina for those who have spent much of their life in wet clothing...
Humour is not the problem, and some of it is absolutely necessary to relax and enjoy life in a friendly manner. I like very much intelligent humour. I believe we can post humoroius posts whithout offending people. We shouldn't forget we do not know each other as well as to allow ourselves to say things we can say only to a close friend.
Believe me, I can be as ironical as anybody and if I want to be really 'bad' I can too. But what will I win with that? Friends? Making me feel better with myself? I'm too old and my life is rich enough as to feel the necesity to go back to my teen years, when I needed to reinforce my own personality. No way.
I believe it's only a matter of using a little bit of politeness and a sense of balance. That makes life kindest for everybody.
However, should the more diletente members wish it, I for one will, with regrets, withdraw from this forum. :(
Why? You're a nice guy...:)

Alot of people - man and woman who depended on plastic surgery have an instant upgrade with a certain risk of failure, but old age will reveal the real body and the artifical item apart.
Be natural be sensitive and love your wife.

Well, this one is on the cover of Yachting World and she is doing what few man have done.
As the French say, "Chapeau" Mademoiselle:cool:
Where in the world have you guys been? Hunkered over your drafting board or monitor drawing funny lines plans? How many of you have taken a tour through a high volume boat factory like Bayliner, Glastron, Foor Winns, Larson, Sea Ray or the like? That's where the women are. They're on the assembly line putting these boats together! You can design the greatest boat in the world but if it doesn't get put together right what good is it? It's women who are doing the dirty work making sure the boats that get to the public are built right.
So, next time you're wondering where the women are go take a tour.
However, that said, your comments about the lack of femininity in the design world is staggering. The same is true of most engineering fields. More the pity. Some of the best engineers I have ever known are women! They bring a certain (as the French would say "Vive la difference!") quality to the occupation.

Women have long been the best inspectors, and not just in the garment industry. They are picky, critical and demanding - the inspectors, not all women.
Hi everyone :)
Are there any women in this forum :?: Or are we just a bunch of MCP's?
Women are quite active in other forums (Cruisers Forum comes to mind). Surely we can do with a few of them around, always nice to have a womans perspective as well, even how crooked it may be.

I am starting small, a canoe and two kayaks, so I can at least get back out on the water. Bigger ones in time but for now all I have is some hand tools and a small garage.
