Option 1 Speed profile...

Moving on with our design profile::cool:

So far :-

Power cruiser

1 Coastal hopping for a week :
2 Trailerable
3 Range 300 miles
4 Crew, 2 minimum
5 Price range, under 50K US, for home built.
6 Must be able to carry on a normal conversation at 3/4 throttle

Constructed easily by a smallish yard and at the same time the yard could sell bare hulls and kits for home completion

Comfortable and speedy

1. Able to maintain planing down to approx 12 knots.
2. Max speed around 25 to 28 knots.
3. Max cruise around 20 - 22 knots
4. Must be economical and comfortable to operate throught its speed range - including displacement speeds

More Speedy...

1. Max speed 45 + knots
2. Cruise 30 - 40 knots
3. Economical at cruise as well as displacement speeds.

Less speedy...

1.Max speed 7 knots
2.Cruise speed 5-6 knots

I voted and have tried to keep myself from saying anything to influence others on this poll. With so few people voting I think we need to intensify the debate. :D I think the “more speed” option would be the most interesting one to work on. For “comfortable and speedy” Tom’s boat is hard to beat. For “less speed”, you can find many boats to choose from. The “more speed” option will require some outside the box thinking. Unless we just throw raw hp at it.
So, come on, VOTE, don’t just lurk out there!

Alright,

You suckered me out of my silence. More speed would be fun to work on ------ but, If the boat can not also be engineered to run well throughout its speed range comfortably, then the interest is less. There are tons of boats out there that go fast and almost none that can cruise comfortably at low planing speed.

The "secret" is no secret at all. It's power to weight ratio and planing bottom loading with a good hull design. Get these things right and it can be done. Mess up on one of them and it won't work. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I put up both the speedy & more speedy options. At the moment my vote lies with the speedy option, as it would probably be a more marketable proposition, but I too tend to think that the more speedy option would be a more interesting design process - so if it comes down to a tie..........
