Hi all,

I am looking for a software which can help me to calculate the shear force and longitudinal moment of the ship especially when the ship is in waves.

It would be great if any of you could suggest me some softwares and how they calculate these shear forces and moments (using the equations in some rules of classification or using the finite element methods or other methods ... )

Thanks for your help!

In order to calculate the shear stress and longitudinal moment on the vessel, it is possible to undertake a manual calculation by approximately distributing the displacement and hull load. Then you can sum all of these forces (bouyancy vs loading) along the length of the hull (break down into stations or modules) and produce a loading graph.

The area under the graph may be used to find the shear force along each position of the hull, which may in turn be used to find the bending moment along the length of the hull. This method requires tabular integration, but does have lots of assumptions. If the shear force and bending moment diagrams are zero at the extremes of the hull, then it worked.

Alternately a finite element package like ANSYS may be used.

Hi fireball,

Thanks for your reply.

In fact, I know how to calculate them manually. However, I would like to find a software to help me to do that job.

I will try ANSYS as you suggested

I have heard about Autoship, Ship constructor, or Tribon. All of them can be used to determine the structure and they are effective tools to produce the drawing but I don't know wherether they can help me to do the logitudinal moment and shear force automatically.

ANSYS can be very effective sructural analysis, however modelling is very difficult. You may import geometry from Rhino however the precision must be set to the highest level that you can achieve.

How to model the wave loading I am not entirely sure, however I know that it is possible to set up periodic loading.

Software like Maxsurf Hydromax allows the hog and sag conditions to be analysed, but to import the structure you must need to use Maxsurf Workshop.

Have fun....
