It looks like it is very hard to stop illegal immigration using unsuitable and overloaded boats. The number of drownings is heart wrenching.
What would be low cost measures, if any, that refugees could apply almost by themselves to keep such boats better afloat despite the load conditions, preferably before embarking on their journey ?

It is in the nature of illegal enterprises to disregard safety. The low cost measure would be to carry half the passengers.

Not only boats but swimming in rivers, transporting by containers/car trunk.

It is the money that moves them.

There a lot of non-boat aspects related to this phenomenon. Considering the nature of this site I would like to concentrate on boat design aspects.
Half the number of passengers is obvious but it doubles the price.
I was thinking of escaping from Alcatraz type of contraptions: like bags of coconuts secured to the side with fast ties, tying drift wood together and ...
Perhaps there are some that make more sense than they are desperate.

Hypothermia will kill people in the water quickly unless in warm tropical waters, you have to be out of the water to survive.

I doubt that either refugees or their ruthless traffickers will ever read this forum to learn how to design and operate boats intended for a safe transport of illegal immigrants.

I would be hesitant to reply with specific options or ideas in regard to this, mostly because we don't need to make things worse.

Anyone looking to tie coconuts together to make a boat, really hasn't the presence of mind, financial ability or just plain common sense, to consider safer options and "attenuation" to their creations.

Simply put, desperation forces absurd decisions. A classic example is jumping from the window, while on the 10th floor of a burning building. A normal person can't stick their head in a bucket of water and intentionally inhale. The brain just will not permit such and action, but introduce panic or desperation and a brain can make illogically decisions. In other words, you have to be nearly out of your mind to drown, by sticking you head in a bucket full of water, well beyond rational thought. Attempting to understand irrational thought, is as foolish as those experiencing it.

There is much more rational for immigrants to take the risks they take than we may think. They also do not make these decisions on the spur of the moment. Granted they are ill advised. But most come from regions with cell phone coverage. News can spread fast. Traffickers may be ruthless but drowned customers do not foster "business".

Like simple WHO propagated oral rehydration treatment formula's have saved scores suffering from cholera (typically in resource poor communities) maybe there is an easy fix, using readily available materials and needing simple skills to somewhat stabilize overloaded low quality boats. (not looking for miracles)

I am surprised Belgium has an illegal immigration problem and MORE surprised they arrive by overloaded boat. Are they escaping from Great Britain?
