Hi,

I am in a student project and we are building a solar boat for the Solar Splash contest. For the sprint event, we need to calculate the angle an the surface of an hydroplaning hull. Does anyone knows how to calculate it or where to find this information.

Thanks

You want the running angle and submerged surface area of an existing hull? You want quick formulae or first principles?

Many empirical tests have shown an angle of about 4 to 5 degrees to be the optimum for minimizing the total drag resulting from wave making and surface friction. This is the longitudinal angle between the planing surface contacting the water and the horizontal. Or maybe I misintepreted your question.

Thanks to both of you,
I have read about the subject so I have some ideas on the principles. But the formulas in my book were suspicious. So let's start with the basic formulas for running angle and submerged surface and I will ask if I have more questions. We are actually designing our own hull so formulas for an inclined rectangular plate would be great.
