Inboard well on bay skiff: need info

I have acquired a Privateer 16' bay skiff with an inboard motor well design. I need some information on what to expect compared to a standard transom mounted motor config in terms of performance characteristics, set up peculiarities, etc. One basic question, why would someone prefer the inboard well over a transom mount? thanks.
