Did you have any luck finding and starting your process. I have zero knowledge a the moment. There are no kayaks here for sale and getting them into the country is very difficult due to not so very honest officals. I am toying with Idea of building my own and maybe friends and possibly for sale.
Any advice would be apreciated.

JEM
01-20-2006, 09:42 PM
Well you have to have a plug to make the mold from first.

You can have one made or make your own. LOTS of discussion on this forum about doing that.

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:04 PM
I have a lot of educating todo, you just can't by a mold and then buy raw materials to use to eject them.

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:05 PM
Did you do that in Panama?

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:07 PM
Importing anything intothe DR is disasterous. Red tape and lots of payola

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:08 PM
It would be very dificult to rep. a company that made them and shipped here. Price would be very high

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:09 PM
Could you steer me to a site that instructs on plug and procedures?

JEM
01-20-2006, 10:24 PM
Buying an existing plug is possible but SOTs are new enough in concept that I doubt anyone is going to sell you an old plug.

For making a plug, you'd basically build a boat via wood or foam or other method. Building via stitch and glue will be quicker, but will not yield really nice rounded shapes. Here's a good book for building a kevlar canoe with a nice rounded hull.

http://books.boatdesign.net/yacht_design_books_0070430365.html

It shows how to make a male plug and pop a hull off of it. You'd make a male plug and pop mold off it. It's for making a canoe but the process would be the same for what you want.

Then you'd follow this procedure:

http://sweetcomposites.com/Mold.html

For a sit on top, you'll have to make a mold for the deck as well as a mold for the main hull. Then you'll have to bond them together without leaking buy some method. I've never done but I'd think it can't be too easy.

William Le Croy
01-20-2006, 10:34 PM
Thanks....I will follow up on these and let you know the results

What I found looked pretty hard. I wanted to use plastic, but now I just don't know if I have the ability. I have worked with wood and fiberglass on my sail baot for many years. I wanted totry a sit on top with a place for a cooler and camp gear. Just to big a dream and I can't buy one inthe country.

$2500 for plans? Wow.

CaptScot

How about a Trawler with sail (a Buehler Troller Yacht), known as a Diesel Duck 38? They are very economical to run and sail with many used for bluewater cruising world wide. All are amateur built and the least costliest way to get out there for the average guy.

A complete set of professional plans 17 sheets (24" x 36") for a low maintenance fiberglass/wood/epoxy Diesel duck 38 by reknown yacht designer George Buehler. Included on rolls are lofted to full-size most hull station molds.

As much as I planned and looked forward to beginning this interesting, fun as easily do-able project for a long time, at present building a Diesel Duck of my own is not in the cards. Therefore, I am offering for sale for some lucky person these plans for a bargin price and fraction of the original price of $500, plus postage or make offer. The DD38 plans originally sell for $2,295, see links to Buehler website below.

Also included are two books: Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilder, Boatbuilding by Chapelle. The Diesel Duck is George Buehler's most popular design with dozens of these sturdy homebuilt ocean going boats sailing the world; see links. Buehler's practical design permits an amateur to build a sturdy boat from scratch with ordinary materials, ordinary tools, custom built to your needs and taste, all for a fraction of the price of a new boat. They are also economical to run.

There is a member group of several Diesel Duck homebuilders sharing info and photos at Yahoogroup's BackyardBoatbuilders2". Buehler's book "The Troller Yacht" would also be a good book to have for building this boat which describes these type of trawler yachts.

Easy to build, lots of room for liveaboard cruising, and furnished to what ever your imagination can dream up. The oceans of the world will be your oyster, not just reserved for the mega-buck yachts. My email scottcatherine@yahoo.com
