Aluminun Sailboat Design

Has anybody here constructed an aluminun monohull sailboat, 40 to 45 feet? Is that really hard to build, I mean, weld aluminun and have a final look like if she had been professionally built?
Any comments on designs, like Van de Stadt or others?
