View Full Version : importing .stl (or other file types) from DelftshipPro in autodesk inventor

Hey everyone

I'm having trouble exporting my boat design from Delftship Pro to Autodesk Inventor. My best gues was an .stl but autodesk can't import this filetype. I now use a trail (only 10 imports). The .stl sill is only a wireframe.
Exporting .dxf also works but takes more steps to import. This also leaves me with a wireframe.

I have to "copy" the wireframe to a surface. Then I would like to "thicken" it but this deusn't work. Inventor says it can't join adjectant edges caused by the thickening.

Is there a beter way to import into Inventor or to convert a wireframe to a part?

just export as iges or step and import on Inventor. try the two files to see which one gives you better result, once you have this surfaces in Inventor you can gave them any thickness and you can cut sections from it

I'm unable to export to .STEP in DelftShip Pro. Iges is a surfaces and curves possibility. I don't now which is best.

Iges works fine

you'll have a surface that you can use in Inventor, so you can create sections and you should be able to have a thickness of the surface.

Thank you for the IGES tip. It works quite fine until some faces woudn't thicken. When I took a closer look it was because of small faults. Th subsequent error occured: "Modeling failure in ASM. Redefine inputs."

What can I do about this error or about the strange thickening thing you see in the screenshot?

I don't know the technical explanation, but sometimes there are some "kinks" on surfaces that create such error, I don't know much about inventor but you can search for a tool to check and repair errors on the surface that may help, for example rhino can do that, also try smaller thickness value to see if it works, also try this:

import the surfaces into inventor, then export the surface as STEP try the different variants and re import in inventor to see if this help.

hope this help

try also exporting as ACIS and then re importing into inventor
