Access Hatch/Hinge Detail

I have a detail I could use some help with...

I have a series of hatchs from my pilot house sole that open to the engine compartment. For the sake of simplicity consider the hatches to have a 1x3 frame (3" deep), with a 1/2" thick "lid" that fits flush to the sole. There is 1" clearance on the each side of the hatch before the sole steps up 6".

I would like the hatch lids to fit snugly into the sole without the hinges being exposed. Does anybody know where I could find a hinge / detail for this arrangement?

Use a piano hinge.

Hi , I did some net surfing. These guys specialize in heavy duty industrial hinges. They can definately handle the weight of 1/2" plate.

These are extremely heavy duty industrial hinges. some of these can be hidden by imbedding them into the door. http://brookfieldindustries.thomasnet.com/viewitems/hinges-center-pivot-series-cph/series-cph-heavy-duty-upper-lower-center-pivot

If you are looking for a lighter hinge perhaps in stainless, than a " concealed hinge " for cabinets are maybe suitable. They mount from the inside.

Have a look at automobile hood, door , tailgate hinges. In steel they are cheap.

I would use a stainless piano hinge rather than the hidden hinges shown. It would be far easier to install accurately and much cheaper.
However, either hinge will work (though you will likely have to bevel or step one edge of the hatch to allow it to rise up without binding).
Obviously, the hidden type hinge shows no evidence of hardware, which looks cleaner, though the piano hinge is fairly clean looking as well.

Blind hinges are a challenge to mount and have the hatch close flush. Be sure to also order some spongy silicone rubber gasket stock to kill sound and water leaks. Get the softest, biggest profile.
