used blue water capable cat's under $125K..recomendations???

Looking for a used cat at the lower end of the market for primarily cruising, but I want it to be safe (with proper precautions) to go from the Caribbean through the canal to Hawaii, tahiti, Aus, NZ, etc. No long term cruising in the middle of nowhere, but I want to be able to go about anywhere you'd likely want to cruise. Otherwise $25-100K buys a lot of plane tickets.

Any recommendations on what to buy or possibly more importantly what not to??


Seen a few Geminis that have caught my eye.. thought I really would prefer the trampoline to a hard deck. (or should I not)? Loved the look of a Wildcat. If I had the money, a lagoon 420

Need live-aboard capable, the lack of a more formal bridgdeck saloon kinda takes it out of the equation. If I was racing it might be a different story. I do like the sail it back aspect. :)

I missread your tramp wish as wanting air-space between the hulls :). Also no idea how many people you need to accomodate. But i recon for a couple one could lose one double berth in favour of a dinette in the galley hull, and have a bimini over the gap in between (the hulls). Your destination list is kinda tropical, maybe a soft-top could work??

now it is currently for sale now in New Zealand, asking $55K US.

If you look through the video you can see that it basic, not westernised. However it has gone ten thousand nautical miles. It does seem sound.

Even if you spent $15K adding things like hot showers, more refinements etc etc etc. It is still doable.

Note the self steering with rubber cord.

If you really really want to go... then yes you can. How much refinement do you need? do you need radars, depth sounders, or is heaps of space and unpainted wood acceptable.

I've sent an email to Delaveau Multihulls, but I'd love to have some first hand observations (and some pics would be even better) before I commit to that instead of the Bucc 24.

Take a look at Catalac. When I first saw these boats I thought they we just plain ugly.
They look way too much like a stink pot. But over time, partly because of my wife's insistance that we look at them, I did. The more I looked and learned the more I became interested. I now think they probably are one of the few bargains. Very strong durable boats. Sail better than they should, lots of room and load capacity. And seem to be pretty safe. Comfortable caravaning.
