I am the original owner of a 1970 Cobra SS 16 ft boat. This is a Canadian built Super Sidewinder. I am compiling a Sidewinder history and would appreciate any information regarding Sidewinder Los Altos/Palo Alto/Anderson, CA and Mufreesboro, Tenn. Also infor re California Fiberglass Limited - the company that first made them in Canada. I am also collecting Sidewinder brochures. If anyone has any please let me know. I have several already and can put them on CD (or email them) in exchange for what I need.
I am also trying to get in touch with Ken Baker the founder - and designer - of Sidewinder boats. I have also set up a photo album of Sidewinder photos on an HP website and would be glad to include any others. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks, Dan

Hello, I was also looking for information about Sidewinders that were made in Anderson, California. I have a Sidewinder that was manufactured in 1973 in Anderson, CA. Can I also have a link to your pictures? Thank you, CBK

Hello, I'm looking for information about Sidewinders made in Anderson, California. I have a 72 16Ft. Sidewinder outboard that was manufactured in Anderson, CA.
I want to restore it but need some info about the paint, seats and rug colors, what make and size of the outboard motor choices for it.

It sat since 1991 as a lawn ornamentand had grass and moss growing in it.
I'll be taking before and after pic's of the repairs if anyone is interested.

Also can I also have a link to your pictures?

Thanks

I picked up a 1970's Sidewinder yesterday (more likely it's a 72) it's blue it has a 70-hp chrysler outboard with auto tilt and trim. I would be very interested in any information having to do with finding original parts or accessories.

She's in really good shape for her age, the cup holders are rusty, there is a missing pass-through door to the bow area and stern light is missing.
The carpet needs replacing and the steering assembly was "fixed" some time ago and I would like to restore that also.

I have never seen one of these before yesterday but I am an instant fan.
This boat is a real head turner. Any advise or information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin Elnicky

I work at a factory and performance boat repair facility in Granite Bay, CA. I bought a 73 cobra 16 two years ago and am getting ready to restore it. Due to the implements supplied by my job, I plan on converting the sidewinder from outboard motor to jet. However I need some close up pictures of a similar boat with a jet pump already installed. I need pictures of the bilge area and pump intake area to get an idea of how its all goin together.

Help from anybody would be apreciated.

Some brochures (or copies of) would be great too.

Thanks all!

We used to race sidewinders in uk about the 70's they were very popular. However the british made Phantom would beat the pants of em. Some thing about cornering . I remember one that had a Big Johnson 235( not a good choice I agree) and it just would not go round -- just went hard up on one chine. Ther were'nt too bad with a 8ohp Yam, but the Phantom kept on taking it.

I have I 14' Sidewinder Cobra. (Probably mid-late 80's) I was wondering what pitch of propeller to put on it. I have a 1982-ish era Johnson 70hp engine on it. Also, I was wondering what size of engine I could put on it? Can I use a 120hm without modification?

Thanks a lot!

The boat is a bow rider, it has a electric start 70 hp Chrysler motor auto tilt and trim. I believe it is a 72. I have pictures I can email to you if you are interested.

My boat mechanic stated he he's never seen that engine in such good condition, it has not been rebuilt, the main seal has never been cracked. starts instantly and purrs like a kitten.

You buys bring back memories:) I had a 70's 16' Super Sidewinder outboard. It was powered with a Mercury 115HP. This was back when stainless props were just coming out. I ran it with an OMC SST prop. Bauman Propellers of Houston rehubbed the prop. The color was blue metalflake with silver trim. Upholstery was white with blue trim. Carpet was a medium to dark blue. I had a lot of good times in that boat.

Hello. The gauges for your boat I believe would have been Teleflex brand. The ones with a shiny silver centre surrounded with a blue line. Best bet would be to search for gauges under 'boat parts' on ebay. I have some, but not in good shape. The original steering wheel is a 12" black foam grip with a 3" dish. Ebay- search for 'grant steering' or 'superior' or ' the 500'. New ones are fairly inexpensive, less than $50. I just cut out all the under bow structure on my 16' the other day. All it was, was (3 )- 3/8 plywood sections about 10 to 12 inches wide running across , glassed in with a 2 mat layup. On top of that running longitudinally, fore and aft, was a piece of 3/4 or 1" plywood crudely glassed in. All was in my opinion very substandard, hence the sunken dash and cracked windshield. I will be putting down a multi layer of roving and mat to the underneath of the deck to strenthen the entire surface, after which I'll glass in a considerably more stout stucture made from 2" square aluminum tubing. The back to back seats in my boat are glassed down, but not by a 5 year old. I would like to know which sidewinder you bought, as I have been watching them on ebay for quite a while. I am looking for an 18' jet sidewinder myself. Yes, I have the top half of my boat cut off, so if you really need pics, I could take some... SSPEED66

Hey Side2. There is a set of gauges on ebay right now, $20, no bids so far. Get into "boat parts", then use the search box & type in "dash panel" It probably won't be ALL the gauges you need for your Sidewinder, but it would get you started in the right direction. Teleflex superceded those with ones that are better looking & have a red needle,(from the mid to late 70's). Also, Stewart Warner made a "blue line" gauge in the same era that has a flourescent orange & flat black needle. Very cool looking gauge. The highest demanded gauges are SW "Green Line", the KING of COOL. I own samples of all these gauges if you want pics, kind of addicting collecting cool old gauges. I refurbish them myself if they are in halfass decent shape.

Fun reading from fellow Sidewinder enthusiast. I have an original 1973 Sidewinder 16' (everything from the prop to paint - including paperwork, brochures). Rated HP is 135, however it's had a Merc (inline 6) 150HP on it since new and the transom has held it perfect. Her stern does sit low but to answer your question, I believe it could handle a 175hp. However, expect chinewalking to start at 70 mph and to ease your mind, I suggest having trim tabs or stabilizer's. This particular little boat still turns heads and runs a comfy 65 with cheap aluminum props and depending on conditions (prop, water, etc.) will run a tad over 70 with a stainless 13x23 prop. A fresh water boat that is used every year April thru Nov. Never moored in the water but on a Shorestation. Today it gets pulled for winter storage.

I have recently acquired what I believe to be a 1970 sidewinder ss14. I think it's a 1970 because it was made in palo alto cal. I am very much hooked on this boat and am undertaking a complete rebuild on the fiberglass hull. I would love to know as much about this boat as possible. I love the lines of this boat and i'm prepared to spend whatever it takes to make this boat the "eyecatcher" it was meant to be, as well as the fastest 14 in New England.
