View Full Version : Sail design - balanced lug

Can anyone recommend a book or other source material on designing a balanced lug rig?

Some questions I've been pondering:
Need to calculate force on luff (luff tension being primary support for aft
(peak) of yard. Luff tape? Luff rope?
How much "curve" in loose foot to allow just proper overlap of boom at
mid-point?
Location of deepest draft?
Rake of mast?
Placement of seams parallel to leach vs parallel to boom?

I do have some books which discuss rig design, but cannot find specifics on what should be basic design issues for balanced lug sail. There seems to be a "that looks about right" attitude that doesn't seem quite satisfying.

Appreciate any help.
Robert

If you have not come across it yet, Todd Bradshaw's "Canoe Rig" is valuable. When you have read it, if you post questions on specifics to him on the appropriate Woodenboat.com forum thread (probably designs), he usually answers most helpfully.

Get 100 Small Boat Rigs, by Phil Bolger.
I think it might be 103 or something now, as he's thought of a few more!
But its an excellent read, and you know he has tried every rig and so speaks from experience.

I just searched on Amazon for this book. Several Bolger books did come up, but not that one. Could the title be somewhat different?
I would like to find it.
Thanks.

Wanted to bring this topic around...
Thanks for all the recommendations..all.

Canoe Rig by Todd Bradshaw contains just about all I needed to. Also, it's a really beautiful book. The illustrations have to be the clearest and nicest of any book I have seen on rigs.
I recommend this book very highly (and thanks to the person who recommended it to me).

Here's the alphabetical index. Search under "Lugsails" and "Sails". It's about polytarp construction, but the shaping applies equally to Darcon.
