View Full Version : Best bolts for engine mounting
Can any one suggest the best bolt to use for mounting an engine to the stringers? The stringers are 3" x 8" Doug fur. The engine is an 8.1 mercruiser.
Thanks, Kyle.
Good, adjustable engine mounts thru bolted. That size engine will take some of the heavyest commonly available, I'm guessing 20 - 24 mm . . .
Can you make a sugestion if the material should be a grade 8, or possibly stainless?
Thanks, Kyle
I depends a bit on the application, but no mild steel galvanized or not. Stainless or bronze are the materials of choice, in that order unless there is a dissimilar metal problem that could come up, use what is used else where on the boat (like the strut bolts)
If this is the boat I think it is then bronze will be what you want to use.
You just can't bolt the mount to the stringer and hope for the best. This engine and trans assembly will be very heavy and alignment will be a fun with the best adjusters, let alone the painful way of shimming and checking.

Thank heavens for the world of modern chemistry and polyurethane mock-up blocks and trannies. It's a wonderful thing
