Is there any resource that gives a fairly fine breakdown of the types of boats and ships that are used around the world?
I know that there are many types of merchant ships and that some need special design attention. Refrigerated ships and banana transports are each special in their own way.
I like taxonomies and I thought it would be interesting to see a kind of tree structure with the different types of boats and ships as branches. Is that available somewhere or would it not be practical to fit them all on a single tree?
TIA

I am sure there exists some kind somewhere, but, as a starter, but may be not to totally satisfy your curiosity, is with Classification Societies. Since all boats/ships, commercial, must be Classed, ergo it requires a Classification "notation", ie its MO.
This may help to start the tree structure at least?
Just a thought...

I would recommend you consider classification by method of sustentation (support)

Jane's Information Group (often referred to as Jane's) is a publishing company specialising in transportation and military topics, which was founded by Fred T. Jane in 1898. Jane began by sketching ships as an enthusiast, and this gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing of All the World's Fighting Ships. The company Jane founded gradually branched out into other arenas of military expertise. The books and trade magazines published by Jane's are often considered the de facto public source of information on warfare and transportation systems.
