The Cat is a heavier more expensive engine that will last about double the time. It will also use more fuel because of its weight. The rebuild kits prices are also in proportion to the initial cost.

What numbers do you mean? If you want an engineering analysis of your boat, it is at least a three days worth of work.

The KTA 19M is by far the better engine than the 3412 in terms of price, reliability, ease of service, specific consumption and 837 further points.

I think that it depends on the use. On a heavy slow moving boat, the Cat may be a better option. If lighter weight and space are important, the Cummins has some advantages. V engines are usually lower and wider.

In this case Gonzo its just a lighter 6 cyl. with much less spare parts against a heavier 12 cyl., with a reputation (in the commercial field) not as good as the KTA 19..
In my opinion the cat has NO advantage over the cummins in this special comparison! But thats my opinion now.

I have always been a Cummins fan. I think they are a better value. However, the cost of a rebuild can be considerable, specially including the downtime. Are they getting as much hours on a KTA as on a Cat? In Sportfishermen they run them at high RPM and then at little above idle. Do you think that makes a difference?

No idea Gonzo! I never was on a sea butcher boat, and of course do´nt operate my own engine under such conditions. At least not voluntarily.
