I am repairing a rudder(bent post) I know to remove all anti fouling paint before glass repairs, but does all barrier coating(interlux) and or all gel coat also have to be removed?

If you are about to make 'glass repairs (damaged leading edge for example), the gel coat in the areas affected will have to be removed. Basically, you need to grind down to good, solid, non-delaminated or damaged mat/cloth, so the repair has something to really grip.
