Hi all!

I am currently studying for a Master of Engineering in Product Design Engineering at Glasgow University/Glasgow School of Art. My final year of study involves a design engineering project (lasting the whole year) for which I am currently looking at potential focus areas.

I am particularly interested in designing a product for the marine environment and would be very interested to find a design challenge within that topic. This should involve a real user issue or problem with a piece of equipment or process which could be improved through design. I was wondering if there were any challenges or problems faced by anyone here, which would be suitable to be investigated in this type of project?

I have been thinking recently about outboard motors as a good area to investigate as they can be pretty awkward beasts! Or perhaps small boat/tender propulsion in general. I would love to hear your thoughts on this or any other challenges.

Cheers,

Nils

You'll get such a mixed bag of comments/opinions here you'll find it hard to know which is sensible and which is pure tripe.....perhaps best if you go down to the southampton boat show next month, if you can. Or failing that...nip over to the shipyards near you and ask the production staff....get some hands on experience, much better...and then you can always go back for more info later, and see it through to finish

Thanks very much for the quick reply and thanks for your suggestions. A trip to the boat show sounds like a very good idea!

Cheers,

Nils
