wooden boats in Tasmania

I am a student of wooden boat building in Tasmania, currently conducting research for a marketing project.

I am looking for details about traditional wooden boats of any type, over 20' built in Tasmania, Australia since 1990. I would appreiciate any information with regards to builders. yards, boats, and buyers....

Look up www.boatpoint.com.au and select 'search for dealers' in TAS only. There are only 4 or 5 I think. Give'em a ring - they might put you on the path.

You are, I imagine, down south there at the Shipwright's Point School of Wooden Boat Building in Franklin, Tasmania, 45 kilometres south-west of Hobart on the banks of the Huon River? I think they would be the only building in wood since 1990 - but, who knows? All the new cray boats seemed alluminium to me. Lots of wooden boat restorations, but new built??

On the contrary, whilst the Wooden boat school is well known for its efforts to continue the art, there are a number of yards that still produce boats in timber - There's a 60+ft cray boat being built in Triabunna at the moment. Creeses Boatyard in Battery Point and Laughlin & Salter in Glenorchy are just a couple that spring to mind.

It would be worth a trip to the state library - I'm pretty sure they have quite a bit of info - particularly in the reference dept.

I have a book (borrowed from a friend) called "Australian Wooden Boats" It is volume one, classic small boats by the Wooden Boat Association of Victoria New South Wales. The Presidents message is dated 1993. The plans include several classics over 20 feet. If they still exist I am sure the Association will be helpful in advising of any that are still being built in Tasmania.

Does anyone know about a wooden vessel built at Triabunna, Tasmania called Ruthean, Huon pine timber, done several Sydney to Hobarts

Dear Jenny,
Ruthean is presently at the boat builder's yard of BLUNTS - Williamstown - Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The present owner had her transported down from Darwin early in Feb and intends to restore her here.
