Any thoughts on using an oil temperature guage to detect weather a diesel engine is running too cool or too hot. Wouldn't this tell me if the engine is underloaded or overloaded? I'm not a mechanic but I know this is an oversimplification. Thanks for

Hi Kelp,

If you're trying to figure out whether your engine is underloaded or overloaded, I suspect the instrument you're looking for is a pyrometer - aka. an exhaust gas temperature sensor. Exhaust temperature changes very quickly with changes in load and is generally considered a good indicator of how happy the motor is.

It can take 10 to 30 minutes to get oil hot in an average motor
Looking at oil temp, you will read the past.
Water temp is the same
Pyrometer, yes give immediate reading of what is happening

Turbo boost if you have specs from the manufacturer.
