View Full Version : Iso 12215-5 ?
Reading this document http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/boat-design/keels-keels-again-10410-17.html#post273777 ,
I found "Part 5 seems to be increasingly used with few problems, apart from a couple of known issues." (Conclusions page 11).
Has someone a clue abouts theses known issues in ISO 12215-5:2008 (the published standard).
Thanks.

what part 5??....#5 is "General" on page 6, in my version
I understood the text as Part 5 refering to ISO 12215-5:2008. Truncated preview available here http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/classification/www.saiglobal.com/.../OSH/iso/.../ISO_12215-5-2008.PDF and labelled as "Part 5 : Design pressures for monohulls, design stresses, scantlings determination"

The link appears to be broken..????...can't open it
Perhaps http://www.saiglobal.com/PDFTemp/Previews/OSH/iso/updates2008/wk15/ISO_12215-5-2008.PDF
Again, it is a truncated preview, ISO rules are not free.

Ah, ok i see what you mean now.
Well, in my copy of 12215-5:2008, this is on page 14,
section 8 is Design Pressures, with;
8.1 Motor craft design pressure...page 14;
8.2 Sailing craft design pressure...page 16;
and so on.
My problem is the validation study document for part 9 (keels) says in its conclusion that document part 5 (design pressures) contains some "known issues".
"The problem of engaging industry encountered during the validation of part 5 continues, often for perfectly reasonable and well understood reasons. It is encouraging that despite the initial cries of despair, part 5 seems to be increasingly used with few problems apart a couple of known issues"
From the validation study of iso 12215 part 9 page 11, published march 27,2009, nearly one year after official publishing of iso 12215 part 5.
I would like to know what are theses "known issues" in the 12215-5 published norm. By the way, it seems that iso 12215-5:2008 has been published as a norm before the end of the validation process.

Ive not come across that before, i generally don't use ISO rules. Only when requested by client. However, it would be worth contacting your Flag authority to clarify the issue of 'known issues'.
I'm not sure what the "known issues" are. I really haven't found anything that is a problem in section 5. Section 9 supercedes section 5 bottom pressures in the area of the keel. In terminology of ABS, this would be the area of the reinforced shell.
My understanding is that there is another meeting mid-November which will change section 9 again, the main change for keels is to eliminate the lower of the two grounding case critera.
