Hi all,

If I'm going to spray Awlgrip in my backyard homemade spray tent, can I use a 3M full face respirator (6000 series) with an organic vapor cartridge? I plan on spraying with full overall-style suit with hood, gloves, etc. and will change my clothes immediately after exiting.

I know alwgrip says to use an air supply system.

However, according to OSHA if I use an organic vapor cartridge with dust/mist, I should be ok.

http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/isocyanates/mdi/mdi.html

According to OSHA they tested 6001 cartridge and 501 filter and it removed 99% of the isocyanate. So before I head off and kill myself, should I be okay with BRAND new cartridges and filters which I'll discard after more than one hours worth of use?

I don't know if I would follow my own advice...but it is far healthier and cheaper to pay someone else.

Yes, you will be fine with organic vapor cartridges. Search the old posts with the key word: "isocyanates" for a more detailed explanation.

Hey, I did some extensive research and let the numbers sway me.

The name of the tread I posted was " a breath of fresh air ".

NI-OSHA claims that organic respirators can mitigate isocyanate's for a limited time, they were talking hundreds of hours. But since isocyanate's don't have any oder you should change they when you can smell your reducers.

I changed mine after every other coat. (2) per session, since I used the three coat method. It does get expensive but so is awlgrip.

I also have some pics posted in my gallery, you might like my spray tent.

anyway I have those articles and supporting docs on isocyanate's if you want them.

LET THERE BE GLOSS!!!!

Thanks for the advice guys! I read the thread, and the documents. It's nice to see both research and practical advice come together.

Hopefully the weather lets me get the job done.

I have been buying my cartridges at $24 for a box of 10 (5 changes) so even at the very conservative change interval outlined above, this is very cheap compared with buying a supplied air system ( minimum $400).

Grady,

Although iso's do not have a detectable odor, all the products you use with them do. Even the hardeners have detectable chemicals; they are never pure isocyanate. So the paint system has 'warning' properties that make it safe to use charcoal cartridges.

Yes Jimbo, I agree. What I was trying to say was, if you can smell your product it's time to change your cartridge. And I always was able to change before that happened, even when I was pushing it a little.

Thanks
