Hello everybody,
I am new here and I am glad to find such a bulletin board for boats and ships. Right now I am writing my diploma thesis about the reconstruction of an expedition vessel.
I want to export an iges file from Rhino3 and export it to NAPA. But the exported splines are so big (too many points) that NAPA can not handle them. No problem to display them, but overworking is almost impossible.
My question is: which parameter could be influenced to decraese the exported number of points within the splines?
I am looking forward to your ideas. Thank you very much!
Regards, Christian

How did you create the splines in the first place? Can you create them using fewer control points? You may want to use the rebuild function to reduce the number of points, but this may cause the curve to deviate from its intended position. When I export from Rhino to Iges I do not get curves which have appreciably more points.

Hello Christian,

NAPA can handle hulls made of iges surfaces. The disadvantage is that you cannot continue to edit them in NAPA. There is however ways to create an editable hull from a Rhino export. I do not remember how though. If you contact the people at NAPA I'm sure they can provide you with an example.

I created ordinary splines that i put on several reference points, their number depends and is always anywhere between 5 and appr. 30. the distance between them is always min. 200mm, but mostly 500mm or more. the iges splines´ points have distances of al least 2-3mm, which is far too much. perhaps i have to influence rhino in a way that the amounts of points in the splines is reduced when i create them in rhino.. could it be like that?

I think this may be a problem with IGES translation by NAPA. Try decreasing the IGES export tolerance. Have you tried posting your problem on the Rhino Newsgroup? Someone there can probably answer your question if this doesn't work.
