Hi folks,
I am making a 35m steel hulled displacement pleasure boat.
I have searched a lot for mid speed diesels in the <1000 hp range really to no avail.
The Lugger L6170 is no longer available (it was a 24 litre Komatsu), the MAK M20 is available but it is really too big, and I have NO information on anything in between that is a viable economic proposition.
I need 620kW...anything a bit more, up to 1000hp is OK for the owner as we can then get max speed up a bit if necessary, but I cannot find any engines that cibe me 1000hp or slightly less without getting into high speed diesels such as Cat or Cummins.
Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.
A quick search on "current models" at boatdiesel.com produced the Niigata 6M26BET with 625kW @ 400 1/min and "continuous duty" rating. All other results were engines which run at (much) higher rpm.
Hope this helps a bit...

did you try Deutz, they are very easy to talk to
try the Wien branch ask for johannes, tell him Stuart sent you
becker.j@deutz.co.at
you know those long range longliners and tuna boats that venture Japan down to NZ and clean across the Pacific, they all have those slow engines

I should have said also that I do not wish to spend over $500,000 for an engine, that is what they are asking for German engines....unreal prices.

Nice, some of those old girls really are good buys.
I bought a 160 footer in the Pacific once for *0k. She was "retired" because it cost too much locally to put her back into survey. I managed to do it for under 200K and she was a great Island Trader again.
MAK 500 hp@ 575 rpm.

The 1st is to forget (I do´nt say crap), the second may fit, Kelvin is by far to heavy, MAN is high tech, high rev., Scania is too small and like the first, and DEUTZ has one engine in that range, the TBD 616 (not made in India Teddy) call William Knudsen:

Mitsubishi maybe worth a look too.

i have heard baudoin are bad but can several hundred french & italian fishermen be wrong ,the're very popular, how can kelvin be too heavy, whats the boats tonnage,

Peter
I assume the fishermen are looking at the price mainly, otherwise I cannot understand their decision.
The Kelvin engines of similar output as a Mitsubishi is about 1000kg heavier.
The boat is a slender 90´ of about 80tonnes.

The problem still exists, I am looking for a mid speed diesel, from 900 to 1200rpm, of 620Kw power, prefer inline......so far, for the boat of 220 tons, I have found no engine available.
The beautiful Komatsu (Lugger) is no longer available......

peter,
I am all for a rebuild, unfortunately the owner wants "new"....he will not accept a rebuild, even though we all know, the rebuild IS a new engine if it is done right, unfortunately I cannot convince him....such if life....thanks anyhow mate.

Need one or two? I know where to get two Lugger (Komatsu) 23ltr. But they refused to deliver in Europe!
And: do you possibly know if the "Pousada de Sta. Rita" in Macao still exists? I built that Hotel with so much passion, ages ago.

Hi, I have them.
Not IMO, but could be furnished with EIAPP certificates in time, as they have requested conversion application from our EPA IMO testing, thru Lloyds, to acquire the certificates that you would need if you are to return to Europe, or even import the vessel into either Australia or New Zealand.
I now would need some more details about your installation to get a definite quotation.
DC control voltage and ground configuration:
Cooling method, heat exchanger or keel cooling:
Exhaust configuration, dry elbow, or adaptor ring:
Number of panels:
Bellhousing dimensions:
Transmission options or requirements:
Alarm system requirements:
PTO requirements:
Alternate cooling exchangers, hydraulic or other:
Alternator amperage requirements:

apex, I have private messaged you regarding this. Thank you for your help.
Looks like we both need similar engines, my requirement is for about 750hp, but it certainly is hard now to get that and below 1500rpm anymore.

Have you taken a look at the Mitsubishi S6R series. They offer 24.5 leter and 30 liter 6 cylinder engines from 600HP @1600RPM to 1016HP @1450RPM

There are several Boston. Some ar easier to comply with than others, but all are valid to some extend.
As with all our stuff, nothing is simple, straight and easy.

Hi folks, just to update this old thread....I finished the design and drawings and build specs for the 120 footer that I was commissioned to build for a Brisbane client, but unfortunately he was stripped of his assets by the GFC and as such the build will not happen any more. We are however looking at releasing the design etc to be built on the world market, so will see how things go. There has been many tens of thousands spent already on the design and plans, so maybe one day in the near future I can release the details so any prospective customers can contact me for further details.
I already have the yard in China to build the vessel, and the expertise to do so to any required standard (or class) as they currently do so anyhow. The yard is very experienced and makes many large commercial vessels annualy currently.
You may email me privately if anyone is interested. Ta, John

Old EMD 567 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_567) or 645 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_645) series? The 6 and 8 hole units are about the right power. Re-sleeve, pistons, rings and bearings and good to go. All were rated between 800 and 900 RPM. The parts are still available.
