The following will document aspects of the construction of my Bob Oram 39'C and to start with here is the intro http://www.boboramdesign.com.au/39-c/ and the profile may look a little like this http://www.boboramdesign.com.au/40-pearl-bay/ but not necessarily so....
Construction is anticipated to commence in mid / late April 2009, build site has been organised and money is hopefully sorted, (who can be certain and confident in these ridiculous economic times)...

Mas best of luck pal
i read in between the other posts that you have sold your houses - great stuff
Please feel free to ask for advise on epoxy - i know that you are surrounded by experts - but i have done an unbelievable amount of experimentation with marine ply and epoxies, i may just have that little tit bit of advice that you could need to make life easier. I have become very proficient at mixing small batches on a daily basis and my "production line" is actually running very smoothly. I have also learned how and when to clean tools and when and what to throw away - all to be cost effective. I have become quite accustomed to work 4 hours and more every day on my boats, i start at 5 in the afternoon to 9, weekends 9 to 6. Once you are into it, its all ok - just difficult to get started.
I am working like crazy to get my little experimental cat on the water because i have started working and drawing my 12m Cat in all earnesty. I still believe that i can get my "Jarcat" on the water in April - which means that i will start my 12m Cat in May/June 2009. The design and technique that i am following is basicaly a combination of Schionning / Oram / Easy. I am not building a "new boat" or re-inventing the wheel, i am basically taking the features that i like from each and combining them to suit my requirements for single handed setup. I do intend to live permanently on the boat as my family will only be with me when they have leave/holidays as they will all be working and persuing their careers, they have no desire to sail with me. :D
Are you intending to live on your boat or is it for pleasure only?

Mas, Q.
Why a power only boat ?
robherc
02-09-2009, 12:39 PM
Fanie,
From his statement that he's building a 39-C (sail powered) with a profile similar to the 40-pearl-bay, I was guessing that he was planning on having sail power, and cutting the cabin to match the 40's profile.
...maybe i was guessing wrong?

I don't think that's Masalai that uploaded that web page, he could never be THAT serious...

Absence? been busy with relocating and stuff, I would like a longer roof aft but if Bob says no then I bow to his wisdom. Sails are twin genoas, one to each bow (so are each bigger than one to midships). No main as the roof there is reserved for solar panels to be set up very last as have an 8kw diesel battery charger in a box up front next to cockpit at the mast...
Electric drive at the moment - the Torqeedo legs are favoured either the 2.0 or the R http://www.torqeedoaustralia.com/Torqeedo_Australia/Products.html and batteries likewise subject to change are the spiral wound AGM style to supply house and motors and nav will be 12v through engine batttery charge system...
Fanie

Sails are twin genoas, one to each bow (so are each bigger than one to midships)
Clever. Exactly what I'm doing with my cat as well although my mast are going to be aft aft like in aft so they can be taken down easily and the 'genoas' are full size. Makes them much easier to handle too vs one huge monster and centre of sail is lower as well.
masalai
02-09-2009, 04:03 PM
I think you may be oversailed...? there were several images of John Hitches "XIT" on this net (search John Hitch?) - the rig is called a hitch-hiker rig...
Fanie
02-09-2009, 04:10 PM
Nah, less than 32m^2 per sail... It's going to be just right.
Fanie
02-10-2009, 11:01 AM
Why do you think my rig is going to be oversailed ?
So Mas, you're putting a shack and a shed up now... right ?
masalai
02-10-2009, 03:11 PM
Shed is there, just waiting for the boat in it to be launched (a bob Oram 44C with 48V DC "Polar Power" electric drive & genset.... Should be interesting to see performance & fuel efficiency....
Just on your description, with the mast way, way back aft and full sized pair of sails (I presumed "full size" to mean as big as could fit)....
Fanie
02-10-2009, 03:16 PM
You told Bob 'there's the shed, fill er up' ?
On a 10m cat, 2 x 32m^2 sails is too much ? Masts is then at only 11m..
masalai
02-10-2009, 03:28 PM
OK retraction - brain not working, so concede..... - still in "moving house" mode contents from Sunnybank Hills house have absolutely filled new home so WTF, ? where will the stuff from Buderim go ????????
Fanie
02-10-2009, 03:48 PM
Your priorities are mixed up. If you got the boat first then Buderim could have gone on the boat.
masalai
02-10-2009, 03:57 PM
But, but, but, but, sale of Buderim pays for boat..... I think I got it right:D:D:D:D .... Lovely Lady wants house, and now has got it... Now my turn to get boat, with full approval and blessing.... I think I know which side my bread is buttered ....

02-10-2009, 04:03 PM
http://www.thecoastalpassage.com/ais.html - this is sort of interesting - - - I wonder how much a receiver system costs? and if it is worth-while on a small boat? Fanie & manie, this bloke (the editor of "The Coastal Passage" is also building a Bob Oram 39'C
rasorinc
02-10-2009, 06:16 PM
It costs many times more than a transponder on a small aircraft. WHY?
masalai
02-10-2009, 06:48 PM
Thought the idea would be a neat way to track what is around and going which way how fast - just the receiver - not the transponder - the link had info on the "B class"

Mas i have been a very keen reader of TCP
and his build pics have been very helpful
will you have close contact with Bob Oram?
masalai
02-11-2009, 08:02 PM
As the designer, and his son is helping with the build as the main man, what do you think ? :D:D:D:D:D.... Bob likes to work closely with his clients and is worth his weight - very good value....
Manie B
02-12-2009, 02:12 PM
Mas this is frikken outa this world :D
Bob likes to work closely with his clients
holy sh1t you couldnt wish for more
maybe this global economic meltdown will play in your favour - i am pretty sure that your build will be one of the very few that will be going on and will that will definately give the top designers and builders more "time" to spend with the "little guy"
hopefully you will also score better prices for materials?
what will the build be - epoxy and ply ?
or are you going for glass and polyester?
please set yourself up for MANY MANY photos as we here on the arse end of the planet will dearly love to see how you do it - as we could never afford that luxury of having a designer oversee a "home build"
go well :D
masalai
02-16-2009, 02:47 AM
balsa cored as per specifications - all pre cut by ATL down near the GoldCoast and delivered with all the stuff needed..... including an extra layer of ply for the bottom.... then more glass there....
masalai,
A free wordpress.com (http://wordpress.com/) blog would be the perfect thing for documenting your project. As you progress, this thread would become very big and difficult to manage and navigate,
You can store up to 3GB of photos for free on wordpress (that's thousands of photos) and if you exceeded that you could start putting photos on flickr.com (which is also free).
You may have already seen our blog, which I have recently moved over to wordpress.com: The Scrumble Project (http://scrumbleproject.wordpress.com/)
Readers would be able to comment on each entry on your wordpress blog, so you wouldn't lose the interaction that occurs here.
As I'd dearly like to see more people blogging about their boat building project, I'm more than happy to give tips and advice on the subject.

Oh Im sure you will get a far better welcome than a grumpy ole Yorkshire man can give you.
They have to notice you first and as this is basically in the middle of the night in US, the septics are all asleep.
Well maybe a few are just getting up and having those silly little pancakes with that disgusting sauce that they put on them.
Actually I wonder where Mas is as your contribution was headed his way.
(shouting) Mas Mas theres someone here to see you.
He will be along shortly--he lives in Australia you know!! probably putting fires out.

Judy, Thank you for your interest, and I hope your Bob Oram 44C gets to cruise the Queensland coast and we can swap stories eventually.... I have developed some familiarity and "family" here, and will remain in this locale to document my build progress.... As you can see "protection" is fairly well established :D:D:D:D.
The build site is arranged and the ATL order is being cut, Sam will be leading the build team - I am the site gopher... You are welcome to put a link to your project as there are quite a few readers interested in Bob Oram designs (I have a link to Bob's page for the 30'C in my signature at the bottom of each post).
Frosty, Thanks for the guard duty - They are another Bob Oram 44C build project and OK folk :D:D:D:D:D - - - I was out all day Saturday (voting for the Queensland elections to return our (Labor) SOCIALIST (in name) government and ensure Mr cyborg of the LNP did not interrupt the party, Then for a drive up to Melany for a leisurely lunch and imbibing - bloody weird - BMW and other "expensive" cars parked all around and *the well dressed window shopping* and inside the pub, conviviality with many bearded & tattooed bikies (sans colours).... - The meal was very nice too....
Good luck with your project. I will be watching this thread with great interest. Not many Oram builders publicise their progress, so I am keen to see yours. Am I right in assuming your boat will replacing the space left by Bryan and Rowena's boat? Lucky you, having Sam.
Yeah, last nights results restored my faith in you mob!

Yes Judy, Just hope our investments work out as planned to ensure everything runs as per plan and we can utilise the availability of Sam and his buddy.... Swiss Chris has finished and departed I think, - - and Bryans boat is getting close - - - Neil B is now building his "last" for himself another 44C so lots of action in this neck of the woods....
(I have a link to Bob's page for the 30'C in my signature at the bottom of each post).
You will need to update your link to the 39C to http://boboramdesign.wordpress.com/39-c/ as as the old site will disappear in a week's time. I know this because I manage Bob's website.

Thanks for the info, I am looking for a local site (Australian) as I am not now sure of the appropriateness of BD.net???
Your "pen & ink" avatar looks quite impressive.... I have bookmarked the new site....
Googling "free australian blog" reveals a couple of Australian run blogging sites. However they do not specify if they use Australian or overseas servers.
If you use one of these smaller, lesser known sites, make sure you can export/download your content easily and frequently, as it would be awful to lose your valuable data in the event of the site going bust or ceasing to exist.
Of course this could happen with the well-funded popular sites like blogger.com and wordpress.com too, but I consider the risk to be lower. I do however perform daily exports of my wordpress.com blogs to my computer (which also is backed up to a external hardrive). I'd hate to lose our boat project data, especially as we constantly refer back to it when we forget how we did something etc.

Do ATL provide any proof test data for the specific panels made for your hulls?

Due diligence will occur :D - - - I have confidence in the product from the builds I have seen and visited using a method similar to that of Bob Oram, Schionning and others in this region - have a look at the "Scrumble Project" link posted by Judy - there are a couple of shots of the delivery - lots of sheets to join with the assistance or a loan device provided by ATL to facilitate the process.
I have regularly visited a couple of builds, watching the processes as they progress and had a close examination of one that was smashed onto a retaining wall, during a cyclone a year ago - the heavy mono that hooked and dragged anchor to cause the cat to dash against the wall was totalled - the cat was mostly re-buildable but may not be done as a new build would be easier...

I will be interested in any independent test data you come by regarding direct adhesion strength and panel bending for the ATL panels.

Hi Mas does - ATL perhaps have a website with a bit of info?
and to add to what the guys are asking i would also like to know the thickness of the balsa and the thickness of the two outer "skins" of "glass"
for the outer skins are they using an epoxy or polyester?
what weight of glass is in the laminate?
if i win the lotto i will come and work by you for a beer and a sandwich :D
unless of course YOU win the lotto and buy my plane ticket :P
Manie B
03-27-2009, 01:55 AM
What would also be very interesting if they have any comparative data on strength.
I would love to know what compares to what eg.
"x" mm marine ply on its own (thick) = "x" mm ATL panel with "x" mm glass and epoxy both sides = "x" mm marine ply (thin) with the same thickness glass and epoxy both sides as the ATL panels
it would be intersting for starters to see in a simple experiment of the 3 pieces - say 1.0 m x 0.1 m supported on both ends - how much weight can it carry before it breaks
Manie B
03-27-2009, 01:57 AM
MOST important of all
what does each weigh per sq meter
masalai
03-27-2009, 04:59 AM
have a look here - http://www.atlcomposites.com.au/atl_composites/ - what is being asked is for me to compare farts, feathers, ply & ferro-cement? - Well check out the ATL website for their various composite panels, then get a designer, with whom you have confidence and had a look at their products and the damaged boats from severe storm damage by being bashed relentlessly onto rocky shores - I am happy so far.... and 350000 is a sum that is not to be wasted....
End grain balsa is light and has some inherent weaknesses which can be overcome with appropriate engineering in the construction processes. - - One does not go out sailing to "play chicken" with a 20+knot cruise-liner, nor ordinarily build to be literally bullet-proof armoured against a possible pirate attack... Several Oram designs are being built overseas using general construction based on ATL composites as does Schionning and I think Grainger, to name a few.... Don't rely on me I am not a boat building expert - I am confident in what I have seen....
Manie, the balsa composite panels come in various thicknesses and weights of "cloth" - usually made to order...
Manie B

Mas thanks for the link to ATL
it is absolutely fantastic
there is a wealth of data and information

Nice to read inbetween some other threads that your order for panels have been placed and that your start date seems all organized now.
I wrote to Scrumble and they are very friendly and helpfull.
One item that was rather interesting is that the panels ordered by Bob was 800 gm bi-axial glass both sides - that was for 13 / 16 / 25 mm thick end grain balsa core.
As a matter of interest - now 5 years later - are your panels also 800 gm both sides or has it changed now with more modern technology ? Lighter perhaps ?
One thing that i picket up on was the thread "dipped in chocolat"
After some more reading i found some folks on the Easy forums have also used a mix of copper powder and epoxy as an anti foul barrier with some good results - so it may be of interest to you. Of course always interesting to see if Bob comes up with something better:D
anyway i am as exited as you are - cant wait for the pics when the "boat in a box" gets delivered :D

Thanks Scrumble (and this thread) for the info
now the MiniCat5 hulls and keels will also be coated in "chocolat" :D and then a couple of coats of anti-foul paint
finally got the hulls and keels done - ready for glassing
the more i look at my little boat - the more i realise that there are more similarities with Oram than anything else, i dont want to start a war between designers but Bob Oram has got the easier and faster build by FAR :D

Well, sold 20 oz of gold, the order will be delivered on 22th or 30th (weather & other things permitting)... I think - must pay the balance of account to ATL, and for Manie, checking my email form..... wait for it..... Wait... - ahhh here it is - - - 65 panels 13mm with 800gm biaxial on both sides - rest, - - - 23 panels of 19mm with 1000gm quadraxial both sides - decks, - - - 8 panels of 10mm with 400gm biaxial both sides - fit-out. plus the narrow flat bottom is additionally reinforced... all pre cut and ready to join into long sheets (length of the boat) ready to nib out and assemble....
I like this - a bit like tom sawyer getting the fence painted - 5 pages and I havn't started yet:D:D:D

04-16-2009, 02:39 AM
and have you got your press set up yet :D
masalai
04-16-2009, 05:52 AM
Printing press for money or the press to assist in joining all the panels? - well - I do not have a tow-ball, so I am hoping someone going down to ATL can bring the press back (both "on-loan" presses are now on trailers)....
Uncle Ben B has the other kind of press, running flat-out printing greenbacks for the good people of USA... That will be truly worn out so I have written that one off... Not that I ever could have acquired or claimed it...
Fanie, I thought I had already been driving everyone testicular with talk of market moods and exchange rate manipulation screwing my margins in bullion trading? - Now I have to learn how to use a camera and post images.... Expect to see lots of close-ups of fingers, grass growing under/around my feet - loss of focus (sometimes I forget to switch on the auto-focus), and it does not have a manual focus either...
Masalai, I hear that the shed will be vacant very soon. Things must be getting exciting. Has a date been set for the work to start?
masalai
04-18-2009, 05:09 PM
Yes Maam, ATL delivery is April 22 weather permitting, else April30 - - even doing stuff in my dreams, like joining the panels yesterday, and last night 'twas marking the hull centrelines and squaring it off using the, "3,4,5 rule", on the concrete floor... (I like that method of building, almost no effort to achieve lots of progress, reality will bite soon:D:D)

I am more mature than that Fanie, I intend to do#2's on the foredeck so NO animal or bird will have the privilege of making a mess on the boat before I do.... (I might do it aft as the deck wash is closer... and I will have to sail out beyond the illegal limit as it is an offence to let raw sewerage be disposed from a boat....)

a very cool setup that i saw was the guy had a small sea water pump connected to a normal garden tap at the back of his cat - kinda wierd to see this guy hosing his boat down all over with an abundance of water as he passed the bar into the clear "aquamarine" stuff

Until it is built, then become a real lazy slob, sit back, relax and pontificate on the colour of lint in my navel when there is no blue cloth/clothing on the boat... Research has indicated that 90% of the heterosexual men have blue coloured lint collecting in their respective belly-buttons....

Will your boat stand up to this treatment with no ill effect? dragged from the shed where it was built, over the grass then up the hill a bit to make space for my build! - - - - bugger the movie segments smallest is 220 and 307 MB of 1920x1080 HDTV - - so I suppose a couple of pictures will have to do... Except they are 4.17MB, 3.92MB, 3.56MB and 3.83MB so if they do not come up, you will have to imagine... :D:D:D

hehehe will use my pocket camera tomorrow, just for you, and to be able to post some pics...:D:D:D - Kit arrives tomorrow ATL with a truckload & Bob with the trailer from ATL then we are off.... Hulls should be joined (bums "dipped in chocolate" anti-foul first), all before July - What a challenge Bob & Sam have set.... - It will look like a boat and will float if it floods, just so long as no rain gets inside as the innersides will not be finished....
Future videoing in HD will see me using a tripod too - is it age or what? videos were not steady - Oh well RTFM also applies:D:D:D
Masalai, you don't need to compromise on photo or video quality to upload them. Use http://www.flickr.com for your photos and http://www.youtube.com for your videos. Both are free and you don't need Windows. (I'm a Linux person too). Both are really easy to use - just create an account and follow the instructions. Maximum video size is 1GB on youtube and maximum photo size is 10MB.
Once the videos and photos are up there, you can link to them here. Here's an example.

This is the empty shed bay, what was in it and now is outside - a new baby - none the worse from having wiped its coppery bum all the way out onto the grass outside - would any other boat handle those stresses with grace, dignity and no damage, but an Oram cat - built strong.... and light. - - - She has a single centreboard casing, with one of 2 boards made, (make a pair, have a spare) resting on the table in the foreground. I am told that if the builder wishes to sell (eventually) its next owner is commited already.. That is the level of quality and structural integrity in a designer supervised build... Good on you Bob... and congratulations to the new owner-builders, a beautiful job... - their second build of an Oram design...

are there any forums or such for Oram boats
Sadly, no there are not any Oram forums, not for lack of trying though. Most Oram builders are shy or something. Why do you think I got so excited about masalai promising to document his project on line?;)
The Easy forum you mentioned does have an active Oram member - username 44c. Click here (http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=254&mforum=easy) for pictures and info.

ok back to boat building :D
here are some little "tips" that may be of interest to you
my modified scrapers
the one with the yellow and black handle at the back - i just cut the corners off a normal 80mm scraper - anyway you like personally - play with angles and sizes
i also put the epoxy in a plastic bag and squeeze it out like toothpaste into the joint - then one swipe with the yellow scraper and everything is clean and level "one shot"
my fillets are good - easy - and very fast
these ones are on the fixed keels of the hulls and will be glassed over when i glass the hulls on the outside
needless to say - building fixed keels to a "nacca" foil shape is a WHOLE LOT MORE WORK than what this old fart antisipated ;)
3 weeks now and i am still waiting for my "chocolat" powder - Africa is not for sissies :D
next week, next month, who frikken knows

Day one - unloaded the stuff from ATL... 1100kg of panels already cut and needing joining to make the full length sections for the boat... The first portents of well-being - an auspicious start, next the Zpress and two piles of panels to be joined - the first 10 panels joined a few more panels later and we could cut out the tabs and have 2 full length panels and a couple of smaller bulkheads.... More tomorrow...

The one in the background is the one we had to drag (literally) out of the shed to make way for my build - towed by a 4x4... good fun... I doubt any but Bob's designs could handle such and suffer absolutely NO damage.... it is a big 44'C stretched to about 46ft and 24? ft beam... Their second build, the first one was based on a mango 39 - "Tribute"... more photographs every work day - hopefully, otherwise very busy and bloody exhausting work for an old fart.... Thanks for the comments...

Mas are you also going single daggerboard?
What is the current thinking your side?
1. Fixed keels

2. Daggerboards (single or double)
from what i understand daggerboard (even single) tacks well
and fixed keels are nice for beaching to clean undersides

Actually sampling the wares - it includes a still and a brewing facility...., and we are considering the daggerboard thing - about the only time I may need it is in a heavy cross wind coming in to a marina pen as it is only about 4.5 metric ton ready to go cruising and 39' loa by 21 ' beam, but then re-saleability to those not versed in cat sailing need something to lift up and down besides their booze whilst making a 60ft mono look like it has a sea anchor out.... so we may have one centreboard - just for decoration....
"Swiss Chris" is heading North in his 39'C it has 4 digits as its name, and is painted a pale yellow - and looks quite nice...
So, the joining of panels and cutting sections out continues unabated 88 panels 8' x 4' to join and then all the big bits are routed/jigsaw cut ready to re-assemble to make the cat....
I do not know what "the Coastal Passage builder was grumbling about - maybe he did not read the manual? everything going ahead very smoothly and Quality control in the ATL products delivers a near perfect kit... - any better they would need to do the build for free - I have no complaints...

masalai
04-24-2009, 10:06 AM
I was convinced that wider is not wiser as the twisting forces increase exponentially and the 39'C is quite a stiff build and designer will not countenance any increase in beam....

Manie, yes, 15 minutes depending on ambient temp....
Fanie, depends on the piratical situation and other factors...
Boston, epoxy is not bad - and we are not working to fasten pieces in confined places yet (tripping out is for later - but getting in to practice with a beer after every day's work.) volunteer places are available for a small fee:D:D paid by the volunteer to me:D... The glass dust is quite itchy, and is partially eased by a good HOT shower and plenty of soaping, followed by a cold shower to close the pores after the "glass dust" is removed...

Ok some more pics - - If you look carefully you will see that the pile of stuff leaning against the wall of the shed is increasing, and the pile in the middle of the shed is getting smaller 63 sheets ready for the actual putting it all together, and about 30 something to go - the serious stuff starts about Wednesday.... - the last one is Bryan showing where the mast on his boat will go... (he needed to stretch after doing some work inside the chain locker nearby :D:D:D:D) then there is peak hour traffic causing chaos as it is very slow moving and bum-per to bum-per (about 4 ft of lots of hairy stinging caterpillars doing their seasonal thing.)...

Here in SA we make basic furnitures with that pressed wood ;)
What does the binary do ?
BTW, we have a stunning product in SA that you can use to join stuff... it's our toilet paper. You just keep the perforations right on the joint and it will never come loose. Our toilet paper NEVER tears on the perforation.

Ok you fools can use mdf (non-pellatised fuel for Bostons steam boat - scrap to stop scratching during delivery), the other is secret high-tech endgrain-balsa with 1000gm quadraxial e-glass/epoxy on both sides @ 150kg/m3.... Quality control is excellent, as is the service from ATL for all nice people.... I am using the mdf (2 sheets leaning against the cut out sections), as scrap to place under something or use as a template to get the shape of something.... almost like toilet paper but useful sometimes...
"mdf" is the name given to sawdust mixed with shit then heated and compressed into furniture for poor people like usanians - covered with a thin veneer to make it look like wood (we gotta get rid of shit somehow) - it uses mostly bullshit.... the good sawdust is put into flour for biscuits (per specifications stipulated by usa), delivered to usa from china and on-sold to SA to feed the starving whites there...
All 88 panels are glued and re-cut to make the construction panels.... first hull will be started tomorrow, then turned over to treat the bottom ready for launch (this is top secret treatment) and will be covered when done, then stacked to one side whilst the other hull is assembled and likewise treated and covered with a black plastic skirt to protect it from drops of paint etc., during the joining and other finishing processes... no photographs today for you cheeky sods....
The cylindrical device is the hot water system and the rectangular one is one of the fuel tanks - all nicely painted... and now installed...
That white boat was literally dragged from the shed where mine is now being built, and then spun around on the grassy slope... Could your build stand up to something similar unscathed?....
Oh did you know that the Aussy passengers on that Greek/Italian cruise boat, are said to have repelled the pirates with a heavy barrage of empty beer bottles, rotten food & over-ripe fruit - it is also rumoured that some fire-hoses were used - but the Aussies said that after drinking 6 bottles a minute they needed to have a piss too - seems all you yanks are redundant - all it takes is some good chemical Aussy beer and some incentive for a drinking party....

This quote has given me some thought. Do you think that it should have been damaged?
I would have thought the opposite and would have been disgusted had a sea boat suffered any damage from just dragging it across some grass.

Do not forget that was the only way (planned and for-seen) to get the build from within the concrete floored shed, and up about 2-3ft in about a boat-length then turning... There was a fellow there observing this activity and he said he would not be game to allow something like that for his boat (heavier, of marine plywood construction with grp on both sides by hand layup).... and I know not of any other designs that could be pulled around on dry land....?
Boston
04-28-2009, 08:27 PM
hate to admit it but we used to get away with murder on green grass
stuff is like a grease and you can slide all kinds of hulls with little and usually no damage.
Im guilty of sliding wood hulls over grass
never concrete
no way
but grass is no big deal
we would roller something out of the shop and up on the lawn regularly and if it hit the lawn we were ok with it as long as we hadnt painted yet
otherwise you would get a really dumb looking green stripe on the hull
then get it up on blocks and braces to be painted
I dont remember ever having damaged a hull by it scraping on grass
as I said stuff is like grease
I can't picture dragging anything across concrete though
big non expanded neoprene covered rollers (with carpet) on em are perfect for rollers over concrete
otherwise you get a black streak
looks a lot like the green streak :)
should I admit that we also used to rock a hull to roll it over sometimes
maybe not
can I write an anonymous note on this thing
so mas Im guessing you put some skids down for the concrete
masalai
05-02-2009, 09:21 PM
The scrap mdf - the stuff you seemed to think we were using to build the boat - with laundry detergent worked fine, (the "game" worked for a while?) but the bottom of the boat is also toughened by a secret mix which includes 10kg of very fine pure copper powder and other stuff....
I have been in hospital for a while - recovering from an infected pancreas - which doubled me up in agony for a while - a near death type experience - with cause at this point in time unknown - slow recovery means no booze and keeping my distance from any new/other irritants (fibre-glass dust & resins etc... Bugger...)
I understand the port hull inside & bulkheads should be getting ready to do the turnover stage and put the secret stuff on its bum....

Hi Fanie, The question mark was in case you were teasing...:D:D:D I am a little tender (having been on a liquid diet of normal saline via cannula for 3 days and little food for the previous 3 days)
In hospital I had been assiduously avoiding the thrombosis issue, and those ghastly stockings and blood thinning injections, by pushing my drip bag "hatstand" around the ward for 4 hours or more each day and desperately trying to remember the "cleaner" boat jokes to cheer up the other patients in the surgical ward... I even presented a 2 hour seminar on how to buy and sell gold bullion, and also a "round table discourse on philosophy" in another 2 hour session... Oh and there may be some new participants on boatdesign.net for the jokes, economic discourse, drivel - no other boaties in the wards....
I may head up to the shed to see how far the build has progressed and post an update later today, else tomorrow evening...
What me - tantrum? - not likely - too much a waste of effort/energy, If the words had a hurting impact I am sorry:D:D:D please accept a few smilies to relieve your stress:D:D:D

The stats (and I have demonstrated to my satisfaction the voracity of the stats) indicate a 10% success rate when asked randomly at a street corner, but if soliciting is illegal - do NOT stay in the one place for long - change clothes and relocate regularly.... Rules - one must ask every person who returns your smile who you would not be ashamed of taking for a meal or the cinema - - do not ask people who may be too young or anything else that may be illegal....
Blonds are not allowed to nurse at Redcliffe Hospital, and your examples would be like cradle-snatching - at my age they are acceptable as 10 second eye-candy :D:D:D:D or risk being barefoot and pregnant if found 45 years ago.... (one looks a bit like one of my grandchildren...)
One of the gents in another part of the ward was using the line - - "I am by-sexual - - at my age I am forced to buy my sexual pleasures..." :D:D:D - - I reckon he may have scored a couple of times in 2 days, from ladies who felt "sorry" for him.....

I used to think that was the norm, and I am amazed at the useless stupidity displayed by so many managers of incompetence who still retain employment... I have operated in that way since about '69 (what a wonderful year for sex-education - all in the numbers...) - My first year of "freedom" after 6 years in the Army... was to embark on an adventure near Rabaul, PNG, - as a coconut/cocoa plantation manager.... It is all so logical and easy to work with what you have got and nurture the skills and ambitions/interests of all of your individual employees.... A good worker loves to be appreciated and to be able to develop their skills/talents...
Boston
05-04-2009, 02:51 AM
and chances are that employee is good at something cause they really enjoy it
and they enjoy getting better at it
even making a game out of how well and how fast something can be done
yurp folks need to be well rounded and learn at least to fill in for someone should that someone miss a few days
but all in all
stay out of your peoples way

Nah, you should print yourself a "Doctorate in Business and Management Psychology" and post it on the office wall - I got a couple of pretend MBA's to balance out the display of genuine certificates - it is a bit like hiding 5 & 10oz bars of bullion, right in the viewers face and no-one has picked the pretend from the earned yet....:D:D:D
Boston, don't you ever sleep? or are you watching the markets for the new days trading? - - I have a bit of a predicament in that the market for gold has gone to sleep and the price is going lower as the $US weakens.... Is nearly everyone in USA on meds (valium?) or some other stuff to turn them all into slow acting dopes? - - - The peons must rise up before they become bound slaves... This is what the second amendment was all about - Get rid of Wall Street & the FED as those private institutions run the country and the elected politicians do as they are told and stay in as long as they are useful to the FED.... It is so frustrating to watch from a distance a once great and prosperous nation fall into a pile of apathetic deluded debtors who cannot borrow any more...

Now for some light entertainment for those who are intrigued by/with numbers http://financialsense.com/fsu/editorials/2009/0430.html explains Fibonacci numbers in an interesting way... A question I have.. what if the sequence was started outside the natural sequence - say - at 120? would there still be a useful pattern match, would it also work in hexadecimal, octal, binary etc?

Judy,
Thanks for the info - I almost got there - lastpost but not the middle hyphen - lets see if I can fix it... OK fixed - Oops - not quite, still goes to page 10 unless it does not recognise a self made new-post:D:D:D
I have been looking around IN AUSTRALIA (as foreign-exchange rates would kill importing considerations at present) for 48VDC diesel gensets of 8000 to 10Kwatts to charge spiral wound AGM type cells and drive the boat with electric motors - - - the Kubota 900cc 3 cyl @ >3000rpm or the 1100cc @ 1500rpm could deliver but all gensets on offer seem to be from trucks or 240vac and not the brushless 12 to 16 pole efficient ones I seek - Oh well - continue searching... The FischerPanda may be on display at the Sanctury Cove Boatshow... I will just have to wait till then :D:D:D

One reason to go for Bobs design rather than try to do my own design - to many engineering problems to sort - why reinvent the wheel when Bobs design is so good.... Also torqeedo drives - subject to satisfactory performance on Niel B's 44C... A hitch-hiker twin genoa on roller/reefers masthead rig, and up to 10KW of solar panels - theoretically, on a hot sunny day I could motor-sail with the engines at half throttle - add 90kg of thrust to sail alone performance...
Hadn't heard of the Torqeedo drives before, so I've been googling. It'll be interesting to see how Neil's trial goes. I cannot find any info on the length of the leg, eg distance between the transom mount and prop centre. Masalai, do you have this figure? I presume you are looking at the Cruise 4.0 R model.

Hi sean, a 10kva kubota based 48v genset set up near the anchor chain locker - forward, charges 2 banks of batteries under each aft berth and the 18kg torqeedo electric "outboards" sit aft in the bridgedeck tunnel - all are designed to be removed for major work and do not go in till fit-out stage, galley is almost domestic in power needs but selected for at least 6 star efficiency rating - the 85l fridge or freezer draws about 300w - 2 or 3 of them - a 2 plate electric hotplate and the list goes on...

Great thread.
I am in process of researching info for a future build of a crusing cat and gathering info and came across your project.
Note your health issue and wonder if it was related to using epoxy resin. seems some react quite badely to exposure. That is main reason Dereck Kelsall does not recommend it. It is much safer with infusion techniques.
I note you also worked managing plantations near Rabaul, PNG. My best man was Bill Clift who did similar work outside Rabaul. He still works up there today.
Once my cat is built and not by me, 3 years away I intend to cruise and dive PNG extensively.
Keep up the good work. You are not wasting any time.

Hi Downunder, I feel it would be difficult to improve on the Bob Oram designs and support. I should be on the water within a year (I hope and wish - as well as intend, all things being near to as planned)...
Not much visually to report today, bum reinforced and glassed, bogging, fairing and chocolate paint and protective black plastic wrapping (against accidental paint/epoxy etc droppings) applied will see the start on the starboard side mid next week. Monday something may see some images of the pretty chocolate coloured anti-fouling.
Sanctuary Cove boat show on Thursday or Friday (Have a medical appointment with the specialist Thursday early) to get pricing and look over some stuff I will find on show.
I am still searching for a marinised new kubota 722cc or 902cc 3 cyl diesel with a Polar-Power or Fischer-Panda generator delivering 8kW+ to charge 48v battery bank (an ideal - but what else is there?)
As a remote Plantation Manager one does not get around much - socialising tends to be with adjacent plantation owners etc... and I like the "quiet life"... PNG is still a really beautiful place as is Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, but many areas are not really safe for western lifestyles and women (particularly in the remote Highlands) fluency in Tok-Pisin is a real advantage as well as a good understanding of cultural behaviour and dress...
I can recommend the "escorted" Louisades annual expedition from Yorkies (Cairns) and back.
Frosty, is it not time that you considered an upgrade to say a Bob Oram 44'C stretched to 46ft? - - My build site will become available in early 2010:D:D:D:D - can be modified (underwater lines) to be power only, as I know you are too old to sail:P:P:D?

Bloody typo's... I am working on the perfect sails, I am in the process of training some "bird-catching-spiders" to spin the sails for me and to obey voice commands so if we are ever attacked by pirates I just have to tell them dinner is coming and to attack the pirates and roll them into a "mummy-sack" and hang for their larder - I reckon the boat will look pretty scary too - so we may actually have to go and chase some pirates... - - luckily, as a spirit being, the spiders are not interested in eating me - :D:D:D
masalai is the PNG word for ghost... and "the Phantom" has been done to death and is a boring name - besides "Mr Walker - the Ghost who walks", is not a ghost... Strange, - before building commenced I could visualise almost every part by closing my eyes and reviewing the design... - Now it is possible to open my eyes (when I am at the shed) and see it - trying to visualise as I used to - does not happen - The visualisation is in the detail of the part I am thinking of, and the rest is faded out...? and I have not been able to get a good feel for the space between the 2 aft berths on the bridgedeck, nor forward around the forward cockpit and inside nav/office areas (P & S of the forward cockpit)... ? - - Maybe because I have not seen the space (in another boat) and fixed that area firmly in my mind...

Well the recent rains put a bit of a dampener on the build progress, with work only on Monday and Friday. The bum is epoxied and chocolate covered and the sides coated with bog ready for a bit of torture board exercise - This is what I was "looking forward to" as a means of loosing some of my extra gut/weight - - But the surgeon recommends abstinence from proximity to epoxy period and booze for another two weeks - life seems almost devoid of the simple pleasures????
I will endeavour to get a couple of images on the weekend to keep you all "happy", and in the meantime - read up on the economic thread http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/open-discussion/global-economic-situation-liveaboard-cruising-yachties-26558-17.html as I feel a cut&paste of vigorous link posting session coming on for those that can read...

So, this afternoon will get some more images to post - the bottom of the port hull is anti-fouled and plastic wrapped to protect it from the topsides paint. - It will then be rolled over and set aside whilst the starboard side is built and similarly finished then the 2 sides will be joined.
Scored an electric ceramic-cook-top at the boat-show, almost got a 130mm compass, enquired after several gensets - bugger no replies for that yet? - seems some business is not interested in making sales - another self-made task? - - - Batteries may default to spiral wound AGM cells, Motors are Torqeedo 4.0R "outboards" - long shaft with controllers, Standing rigging is local construction & sails - flat cut - using a cruising laminate on roller furling/reefing system - all very KISS so far, - as electronics and deck hardware will be from known suppliers (not much difference in choice except support/cost margin?)...
Appropriate product offers are solicited - send me a PM, with a link to your catalogue and pricing structure for delivery just north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia...

Well those shots of 23rd were done in the "dusk/dawn" setting... Now with a more appropriate setting (automatic), these show the hull getting close to receiving its undercoat.... This extravaganza of visual edification cost me some $333 and 4 points (12 allowed in any 12 months then loss of drivers licence) so that amount will go as an expense item in my build cost.... Mas,
I presume you have tracked down this website of SMG Multihull with 50ft capable of up tp 10 knots with FisherPanda wisper electric drives. Links at bottom.
from website ................The ultimate catamaran
Gerhard Schein gives his best and works in his mastermind office in Thalheim day and night on the ultimate catamaran.
”SMG 50plus”. The 50 means feet, that means some more than 15 meters length! And the plus points at the many innovations, included in this catamaran. For example the SMG 50 is the first catamaran sporting an A-frame-rig! The advantages are speaking for themselves – the mast with a height of 18 meters does not need any supporting rigging to the side where the forces are greatest – it stands for itself. Furthermore it is possible to set and reef the sails with a minimum of buss at any point of sail. The catamaran doesn’t have keels or duggerboards. But the use of deep V-underbodies like sport catamarans and former Polynesian craft gives very good pointing ability.
The advantage is obvious. 85 cm of draft with 15 m of length is record-breaking and opens the most beautiful bays. It’s also possible to beach this catamaran very easily.
The whisper-engine concept
There is also an innovation with the propulsion system. A high-voltage electro motor does its job in each hull. The power is provided by whisper generator. Actually the Luxusliner “Queen Mary II” is powered dieseleletric. The North German Company FISCHER PANDA (www.fischerpanda.de) provides the innovative propulsion – you have to concentrate to hear the motor at all – all this comes along with around 40 % of fuel saving and the advantage of the amenities of 220 AC on board - providing again more freedom.
Construction in a high quality
The first prototype with its first launching in autumn 2005 was built from a Bulgarian boatbuilding group in Varna.
The start shoot was at june 2003. The SMG Multihull GmbH was founded and Michael Traussnig (www.yacht-foto.com) visualized the plans in 3 D. At that time it started!
Until July 2006 we are building the SMG 50plus in Cape Town in a high professionally way and founded the SMG Multihull South Africa at the beginning of 2007.

Any advise for those of us that are still in that planning (dreaming) phase?

For me the FischerPanda gensets were prohibitively expensive and rating seemed to be "peak" and described as "continuous" prices offered last week were: - AGT-DDC PMS 8000-48v - $27,424.40 + GST, - - AGT-DDC PMS 10000-48v - $29,563.00 + GST, - - AGT-DDC PMS 11000-48v - $31,927.00 + GST... Gst here is 10% Prices in AU$ at recent exchange rates for EU..... - - - and still using a Kubota 3 cyl powerplant, I halved the price and less than half the weight as FP will not deliver without the "soundproof" box...??? I am using a pair of DELCO 20 pole brushless alternators connected in series...
Wow 8.5 tons EMPTY? mine fully loaded in cruising mode is about 4500kg, if that 50ft boat becomes filled up as in the illustrations should add another 1500 to 2500kg... Plus fuel & water...
I spent near 2 years looking at my needs (not aspirations) and found the Bob Oram design philosophy met nearly all my needs - The thing is to carefully consider where one intends to cruise, and what one NEEDS rather than what one desires to pose in/on... Figure out whether you intend to be a marina resident or be as independent as possible, are you cruising (live-aboard abroad) or day-sail racing around the buoys? - - when the weather blows up will you run to a marina of seek to hide up a nearby creek, or, head for mid ocean? - - - - All logical and sensible steps in the process which will determine the direction of the compromises made in selecting the design of the boat for you...

Mas,
I only mentioned the SMG link because of the FP electric drives and clearly you have done plenty of research. I priced a 6000i generator at Sancuary Cove and concur they are premium price.
Have spent a couple of cyclones in mangroves (one in Percy Is on a 50ft Crowther motor cat - Ruby) waiting to pass and agree mangroves are the only place to be not in a marina if shit happens.
I reckon I have about another 12-18 months of research to do but am looking at around 44-45ft and there a number of good aussie designs to observe including the Oram44.

Landlubber, Did he have an involvement with a powercat build at the end of Aquarium in Hemmant? - or was his the scimitar 1010? - which is a very nice platform for fishing locally...
I was down that way yesterday to buy a bobtail nanni/Kubota N3.21 from Sea Wasp Australia http://seawasp.com.au/products/nanni.html .... delivery in 3 weeks and a fair price.... I will have a pair of Delco 100A alternators and controllers sorted out by Phil Dorman, Wattagan Innovations, http://www.wattagan.com.au/index.html?target=p_8.html&lang=en-us also at a quite reasonable price.....
downunder, don't worry about my curt sounding response - mostly preoccupied with other things/projects - I am really quite nice, and prepared to talk the ears off an elephant... - and in text mode tend towards brevity in extreemis...?
Today's progress, - This is how I like to see a "highway Patrol car" :D:D:D thence to progress on the second hull... with the first one pushed aside to make room, waiting for the both hulls to be faired, sanded then undercoated ready for turning right side up , joining and fitting out???

Darn boats go slow eh. I deliberately stay away for a couple of days hoping to see some major progress, but no.

Keep moving the stuff around. It looks like progress.

Well, no new pictures today as the work is not really visual... finishing the bow, internal and externals as well as geting ready to place the bulkheads needed for "roll-over" so the bum can be finished, another 4kg of copper dust to go on as part of the anti-fouling process. - All should be completed in 2 weeks and then ready for the joining of the 2 sections to make a cat!
So yew lot, aveagoodweekendanddontforgettheaerogard (aerogard is a spray-on insect repellent)
Fanie, I do fish, but only for food, loose interest too quickly to play games.... then I go and start drinking, and when I piss over the side, a fish will then commit suicide and go for the hook (nothing like a threat to get a response)...

Is this boat to use water ballast? How will that work? Can you give me a url on the rig you are planing I searched around this site, but never found anything other than more claims of what a good rig it was with no information. There are hundreds of potential pages that come up in a search, and X-IT did not come up at all. I think Bob has the best process for doing the big builds. Basically just scaled up stitch and glue, which everyone likes, but runs out of steam with plywood in fairly small sizes.
masalai
05-30-2009, 07:55 AM
ThomD, the build is a little like S&G, but it aint, it works with balsa-cored-glass stuff (DuFLEX), it is bloody good when the appropriate techniques are used - No water ballast - why slow it down with extra weight? - It is not a mono that needs tons of ballast to keep upright, just good design from the start...
The Hitch-hiker rig was developed by John Hitch, (some images here http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/main-less-rig-21274-5.html#post195286 post #73 and http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/main-less-rig-21274-2.html post 21) - an Australian designer and builder, with a knack for some pretty amazing engineering stuff - "Wired" is another of his designs.... (use the search engine to search inside 'boatdesign' and you will find quite a few images) Basically the rig is for "downhill" sailing but can point fairly high when push comes to shove, once the constraints are understood (I do not yet - so don't ask me) and uses 2 genoa like sails one to each bow of a cat - never sail wing-on-wing as there is no advantage there. - No mainsail and mine will have a forward cockpit for sail work (not often) and which does not get wet very often - but most driving is on autopilot (wander almost anywhere using hand control on manual as a "remote wheel" - legal for racing - :D) - or inside sipping coffee or....
4 of Bob Oram's design kits from ATL will fit inside a 40ft container, so with a group getting together stuff for the hulls can be purchased for either the 39 or 44 ft versions - check with Bob first.... For mine, all the panels came on one pallet of 1100kg a bit over 8 x 4 x 4.5ft and the other stuff 800kg? or so on another pallet... The difficult part outside Australia is the hire of the Z-press needed in gluing the specially prepared (patterns cut with router & other cutters by a computer controlled system) panels together in sequence to produce the pre-cut 40ft long sections to make the hulls, bulkheads & etc....

Water ballast is a component, mainly to counter use of fuel, food and water during a cruise as light weight cats are load sensitive. - I have a RO watermaker and when I make some more potable, I will fill the tanks appropriate to maintain equilibrium - (is that the word I am after?)...
Not necessary to pump from port to starboard or forward to aft etc., depending on immediate cruising-sailing demands - as I interpreted your question originally...
Went and took some pictures - will not post again 'till 4June - enjoy while you can/may:D:D:D
Bit of undercoat on the first hull, Chain-plate ready for reinforcing with some 14 layers of glass strapping, The "wambat" used for applying epoxy mix to various lengths of glass tape, The mixing table with digital scale(centre front of table wrapped in 'replaceable' plastic bag), electric drill as epoxy/paint/stuff mixer (sitting on red drum - only 3 weeks young and encased in epoxy already:D:D), view from rear looking forward....

Just for you poor saps, with tongues hanging out in eager anticipation, herewith some more images, tooked just minutes ago.... Jeeeees - is there no rest for the wickedly weary?
As you can see first part is bogged & sanded ready for undercoat, second has been turned over (yesterday) and some of the joins made no the outside, some more joins on that today as well as bogging and buffing/fairing to be ready for undercoating with hull "a" and then for part "a" & part "b" to be joined in whole union to become a whole so as to make a permanent hole in the water.... Did I mention engine is ordered and stuff like that - Yes I did so back to work everyone, You have done well....................?

Hi Mas
really looking good and coming along handsomely:D
Another slightly off topic question =
I regularly read Scrumble (like the aluminium plate inserts) and also check the Oram site and i thought that you may also go with WordPress.com. I have checked WordPress out and i also really like what i see.
My question is how and why does one decide where to do your blog.
It ends up being a lot of work over time
and i am sure that everybody will go nuts if WordPress goes broke and you loose everything
Any Ideas?
Scrumble
06-08-2009, 09:12 AM
Good Day.
Manie,
The Scrumble site is regularly backed-up to our computers using Wordpress' export facility. You can leave WordPress.com any time you want and your content isn’t locked in. They provide a complete XML export of all your posts and comments.
You have probably noticed all our photos are on Flickr - we have back-ups of all photos on our computers too.
In addition, Judy has created a way to download the Scrumble site in book form (.pdf ) in each year packages. These were mainly for our own peace of mind, but we made them publicly available here (http://scrumbleproject.wordpress.com/downloads/).
Wordpress and Flickr are very good software, free and easy to use, even I can mostly build reasonable posts, at least I hope so.
It would be very interesting to see a blog or photo-stream about a ply build, as most existing ones are a bit lightweight in content.

Mas the wheel has turned here like you wont believe
Work and money is now something in the distant past that we can only talk about in hushed undertones - jeez i am even thinking that it was a surrealistic whiskey induced "trip" :D :D :D
Anyway i had some seriously big issues to confront over the last couple of months ( money money and money ), as you know i have 2 children at university which is not free in Saffa and i cannot stop building a boat. I have been inflicted with a very serious mental disability / incurable disease, its Latin name is " Buildumi Boatus" I told by some very learned folks that it often happens to the male species when they reach the ripe old age of 50 or maturity which ever comes first, my wife and children think that i will never grow up, so it must be the over 50 thing as i am now 56. Of course it may also be a fondness of the smell of epoxy over marine ply, mix that with a glass of red wine and i am 20 again;)
So of i go to Wynand, the man is a walking encyclopedia
http://www.steelboatbuilder.com/
It is always a pleasure going there - also to see how the Waratah is coming along - and of course to discuss my infliction. So we came up with a solution.
http://hensevalyd-english.jimdo.com/works-and-creations/souriceau-4-75m-micro-cruiser/
The Souriceau was the main inspiration. What happened next was the tight budget, but we found that we could comfortably stretch the boat to 5m x2.3m. The design parameters are a wierd and wonderful combination of Transat Mini - Pogo2 - Dix Didi Mini and of course Souriceau. So one could call this a scaled down version of the lot.
I have been doing the CAD and Wynand has so graciously assisted with the Math. Needless to say it has been a sh1t load of work over the past couple of months with MANY a sleepless night and MANY days when i just wanted to fu3king smash the computer into a billion TINY little pieces. I am a social sailor with some 30 years experience who loves sailing and i know my way around boats.
Now for chapter 2 of this fairy tale. Go to Wynand, get the books and guidance, and start studying Yacht design. I was also intent on getting CAD; Freeship as well as "development" and Sailcut working together in "harmony" (if such a thing ever could be) Farkit what a performance, my wife wanted to shoot me and my computer, the kids wanted me commited to a sanitorium for Buildumi Boatus patients. And worst of all i stopped drinking which meant that i was always at it 24/7 First time in my life that the family says "Jeez dad have a drink and chill-out man"
And now for the really good news - yacht design is a rather remarkable field of study - the more you study THE LESS YOU KNOW. It is like a moth to a flame, you know you are going to get burned but the flame calls you back and sucks you in deeper. I am now at that absolutely wonderfull point - burned to sh1t and i now know absolutely frikken nuttin:P
Anyway the drawings and design are now at that never-ending 99% complete, the first Marine ply has arrived and with a bit of luck i am starting with the lifting centreboard and casing (Naca 63-012) and bulb keel. Next will be the 2 rudders (Naca 63-010) and then the frames, which will be the building stock ala Oram / Bateau. The boat is a multi chine ply and epoxy creation. Furler rollers and blocks by Fanie (all in stock already):D
So in conclusion - here i am - stark raving mad and starting my fifth build.
I have seriously neglected my search for crew - the wickedweasel folks probably think im dead :P and the Jarcat hulls have moved on to a new owner together with the dory.
As Freddy Mercury said "The show must go on" :D

AND i am ahead of the "brightspark children" for a change
my 18 year old daughter actually passed it for very good
now Mas i need yours to post on my links column :D
Manie, that is brilliant - I'm impressed!
I've added a link on Scrumble Project to your blog and subscribed to your RSS blog feed. So you'd better keep providing updates ;)
The pdf links work, and hovering over the links does cause the description to appear. I like ours!
Just one thing to consider: if you are going to have a lot of photos, you may fill your 3GB quota on Wordpress fairly quickly. In this case I would recommend using another photo hosting site (eg Flickr which is by far the best in my opinion) for your photos. It is an easy process to link to the photos from your Wordpress blog, once you figure it out - even Tom now does it well.
I don't know about you, but I find very annoying the preview window that pops up when you hover over a link in your posts. This is turned on by default in Wordpress. You can disable it by going into your Wordpress Dashboard, selecting Appearance in the left hand side menu, then Extras. Then uncheck the box next to "Enable mShots site previews on this blog" and click the update button.
