OMC Change Over

Looking at buying a Boat with old style OMC Drive, stringer mount can the newer style OMC, say 800 be installed, or what is needed to switch to Merc or Volvo I know the hole needs plugged to do that, Boat is a 77 Reinell.

How did you ever make out with project? I have an OMC electric shift and certainly would not consider going to an 800 an upgrade.
