Diesel for a 25' - Need help

I am looking for the right engine to power a 25' planning aluminum boat and I am trying to find out if there are any additional engines I should consider that I have left out in my research so far.

I am planning on a engine in the 220-270 hp range. Diesel and sterndrive. It needs to be fairly compact with a length of maximum 110 cm/43" forward from the transom and so far the ones on my list are the following:

Yanmar 4LHA-STZP, Yanmar 6BY series, Steyr 256, Volvo D4. (The older KAD 43/44 is too long) I am aware of the Mercruisers and FNMs as well.

Are there any other good reliable models that should be considered?

i thought nani would be ok since they were toyota based
i could be wrong im not that big into engines
we were gona buy one before we bought the vm mercruiser
maby its a good job we dident lol

There is nothing wrong with "Nanni Diesel" there are just some better qualities around, like Yanmar, just to mention one.
And btw Nanni is using different makes as basis engine, not only toyota. Same do others. The higher powered Volvos are Deutz engines! Not bad either.

The Deutz based Volvo engines (D5 and D7) are actually "low powered" commercial engines for displacement hulls and continuous duty.

jepp... you´re right! As long as you mean "low rated" .....I was a bit outdated.
Although I said "higher powered" and I meant the range from about 4 to 7 ltr. displ. and that was right. They are developed and built by Deutz!
The Vetus / Deutz are the "higher rated". You´ll find them here:

im using the 440 yanmar diesel at present in a 26ft with surface drive what you oppinion on them i hear the timing gear can give bother at about 1000 hrs i just hope its not the case yanmar parts can be expensive

I´ll ask at the yard tomorrow. Personally I have´nt heard about that issue (wich does´nt mean much).;)

Yanmar has a lock on the spare parts. The are more expensive than others. Might want to look at Westerbeake/Universal. Not sure if they have one that will fit, but most are based on Kubota tractor engines. Lots of available spares without the marine price mark up.

yea tell me about it i was going to replace my oil and filters but just for the filter kit was something like £170
i have tried a few of my local motor factors and they dont carry the part numbers :(
